Dewey, Daffy and Mickey among vote-getters in Clallam County

Bill beat Hillary by a 3 to 2 margin, but John McCain triumphed in the race for president — with five write-in ballots counted by the Clallam County auditor.

Trailing the write-in field in the general election that ended last week were Howard Dean, Colin Powell, Michael R. Hill, Dry Creek Homeowners Association leader Harry Lydiard — and Dewey Duck — all with one vote apiece.

Daffy Duck, no relation to Dewey, got a vote for Superior Court judge.

Another entertainer, Rin Tin Tin, received a vote for Clallam County sheriff, obviously in an attempt to make the two-candidate race a dog-eat-dog competition.

Most of the write-in candidates got one vote each.

Some were recognizable political movers and shakers.

Martha Ireland, former Clallam County commissioner and now a Peninsula Daily News commentary page columnist, received a vote for state senator and another for state representative.

Someone wrote in the name of County Prosecuting Attorney Deb Kelly for state representative, and former District Court Judge John Doherty got write-in nods for Supreme Court justice and Superior Court judge.

And perhaps America’s biggest write-in political loser, Mickey Mouse, got one vote for county commissioner and another for Superior Court judge.

All the write-in votes were valid and recorded, said Elections Supervisor Patty Rosand.

Clallam County Fire District 3 commissioners agreed on April 2 to seek a real estate market analysis for Lost Mountain Station 36 after multiple attempts to seek volunteers to keep the station open. They’ll consider selling it and using funds for emergency supplies in the area, and offsetting construction costs for a new Carlsborg fire station. (Matthew Nash/Olympic Peninsula News Group)
