PORT TOWNSEND — At the Jefferson County Fair, which opened Friday, the midway is lined with food, fun and farm-related activities involving local youths through today, when it will feature a Demolition Derby.
“Everyone gets to share what you’ve been doing throughout the year, and you get to be inspired by other people’s creations and be inspired to make your own,” said Ella Ashford, 12, a 4-H member who is displaying quilting and art projects.
The fair continues from 10 a.m. to
6 p.m. today at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St.
One of the new attractions is a Water Ball in which people climb into plastic spheres and simulate walking on water.
The new ride drew children as young as 3.
Another new attraction is the the Demolition Derby, the first at the fair since 1979.
Cars will crash and smash at 2:30 p.m. today on the main stage. It will be preceded by the Mud Drags at 11 a.m.
General admission tickets are $6. Tickets are $5 for those older than 65 and students from 13 to 17. They are $2 for children 6 to 12. Children younger than 5 get in free.
Although no attendance figures were available this weekend, the front parking lot was full in the late afternoon Friday, which Fair Board President Bill McIntire said is an indicator that the fair is breaking even.
