PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Department of Community Development has extended to Jan. 28 the period for public comment on a proposed Fred Hill Materials Inc. expansion project.
The proposal is for Fred Hill to extend its activity to the Wahl Extraction area, to mine sand and gravel from 137 acres of a 165-acre area near Shine.
Extracted material would be conveyed and processed at Fred Hill’s Shine Pit and would then be transported to local and regional markets by truck and trailers.
“This application is not for the ‘pit-to-pier’ project that has received so much attention in the past few years,” said Al Scalf, community development director.
“The proposal is to move the mining operation westerly, into the commercial forest area, shielded from public view.”
