Clallam panel to mull deal for fair rodeo

PORT ANGELES — With just a little more than a week before the start of the Clallam County Fair, the three county commissioners today will consider awarding a $9,000 contract to Gold Buckle Rodeo Co. for the rodeo events

Aug. 17-18.

The fair will begin Aug. 15 at the county fairgrounds in west Port Angeles with the theme “Party ’tilcq, not till the Cows Come Home.”

County Parks, Fair and Facilities Manager Joel Winborn pitched the annual rodeo contract at the commissioners’ work session Monday.

“This particular contractor has been on board with us for quite some time,” Winborn said.

“We usually try to solicit several bids, and this year we sent out 16 letters. Of the 16, we received three bids, and Gold Buckle was the low bid.”

Gold Buckle Rodeo, based in Roosevelt in Klickitat County, will provide the stock, a bullfighter, announcer, pickup men, rodeo clown, freight and insurance.

“They do a good job,” Commissioner Mike Chapman said. “They have some good stock.”

The Pro-West Rodeo Association will provide the judges, timers and a secretary for the weekend rodeo. The events are scheduled for 5 p.m. Aug. 17 and noon Aug. 18.

Cowboys and cowgirls will be competing for $5,400 in total prize money.

The other bids came from Daniel Beard Rodeo of Ellensburg and Lazy HK Bar Rodeo Co. of Silver Creek.

Meanwhile, commissioners today also will consider purchasing the last piece of right of way the county needs to widen Old Olympic Highway between Gunn Road and McDonald Creek in Agnew.

The $5,840 agreement with a private property owner includes a utility easement, tree removal and a fencing allowance.

The county road will be widened to 40 feet in early 2014 to match previously widened portions of Old Olympic Highway.

Clallam County also is seeking $506,025 in federal funds to repave the westernmost 1.3-mile of Old Olympic Highway between U.S. Highway 101 and Siebert Creek.
