Clallam: No West Nile virus found in dead birds tested

Laboratory tests of dead birds found in Clallam County have failed to turn up evidence of West Nile virus.

But the county’s epidemiologist said testing will intensify through September, when the flu-like virus is most likely to be found.

“I think West Nile will be found. . . . If it’s really going to happen this year, I think we’ll see it happen in August-September,” said Stacie Neff of the county Health Department.

Neff said the county sent three dead birds to the Washington State University animal diagnostic laboratory in Pullman for testing. — one each from the Sequim, Port Angeles and Forks areas.

The state has allowed the county to send up to 40 specimens for testing this summer.
