Clallam County Sheriff Joe Hawe celebrated what appeared to be a victory in his re-election bid Tuesday night, but challenger Soeren Poulsen remains optimistic he could still win.
Hawe led Poulsen after initial returns with 56 percent, or 7,706 votes.
Newcomer Poulsen garnered 44 percent, or 6,131 votes, marking a 1,575 vote difference between the two candidates.
More than 8,500 votes remain to be counted.
