LAKEVIEW, Ore. — Sam Phillips, fire chief of Clallam County Fire District No. 2, has been dispatched to assist with fighting the Barry Point fire in Fremont-Winema National Forest.
The Barry Point fire was sparked by lightning Aug. 6 about 22 miles southwest of Lakeview, Ore.
As of Wednesday morning, the blaze, which is burning in timber, had grown to cover 59,259 acres, according to www.inciweb.org.
Phillips is one of 44 specialized incident management team — or IMT — members on Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 2 where he serves as a safety officer for emergency responders.
Pacific Northwest Team 2 is an interagency team composed of firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, tribes and county and city fire departments.
Phillips’ team is classified as a Type I National team.
Clallam Fire District 2 covers some 85 square miles around Port Angeles.
It is bounded on the east by Deer Park Road and Lake Crescent on the west. Olympic National Park makes up the southern boundary and the Strait of Juan de Fuca the northern boundary.
