PORT ANGELES — Clallam County commissioners will accept applications through Friday for the interim county sheriff’s position to be filled when Sheriff Joe Hawe retires Oct. 1.
The commissioners Tuesday adopted a resolution opening the application and interview process.
The commissioners are scheduled to conduct candidate interviews Sept. 19, and then a background check on finalists for the position, which pays $63,670 a year.
Interviews are expected to be conducted in open session.
The interim sheriff will run the department until the November 2004 election is certified.
As part of the resolution, the commissioners are set to adopt minimum qualifications for the interim sheriff’s position that include U.S. citizenship, being a county resident and registered voter, “and possession of, or ability to obtain, a basic law enforcement certificate within a year.”
The certificate is obtained by attending an academy.
