Clallam: County tweaks junk vehicle ordinance prior to vote

Clallam County commissioners will vote on a proposed junk vehicle ordinance today after resolving four outstanding issues during Monday’s work session.

The vote will take place during the commissioners’ regular session, which begins at 10 a.m. in meeting Room 160 of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Although it is not a public hearing, citizens may comment on any issue at the beginning of the session.

Under the proposed ordinance tweaked Monday, if the county receives two written complaints — one of which must be from a property owner within 800 feet of the offending parcel — about junk vehicles on a property, then a public nuisance can be declared.

The property owner will be in violation if he or she has three junk vehicles on a lot smaller than two acres or five junk vehicles on a two-acre or larger lot.

State law defines a junk vehicle as a motor vehicle meeting three of these four criteria: three years or older, extensively damaged, apparently inoperable and having market value only as scrap.
