Chain gang keeps busy in community

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang cleaned up 160 pounds of roadside litter from eight miles of Undie, Smith, Kallman and Hollow roads and Bogachiel and Calawah ways, 200 pounds of roadside litter from four miles of Monroe Road, 40 pounds of roadside litter from two miles of Ranger Road, 60 pounds of roadside litter from 1.3 miles of Wilson Road and 200 pounds of roadside litter from seven miles of Mary Clark Road during the week of April 29 to May 4.

Notable items found include a car, three needles, five tires, roofing material, clothes, a tarp, tents, a plastic chair, three wood cabinets, treated wood posts, ceiling tiles, a metal light, a shovel and refrigerator doors.

Crew members also picked up 1,360 pounds of litter from two illegal dumpsites on Ennis Creek Road, 2,440 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Jimmy Come Lately Road, 780 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Elwha River Road, 1,160 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Little River Road and 1,000 pounds of litter from three illegal dumpsites on A Road.

Crew members assisted the road department by brushing and chipping on Herrick Road.

Crew members sprayed noxious weeds with Jim Knape at Kirner Pit, Blyn Pit, the Sequim county shop and the Sequim auxiliary yard.

Crew members also put up road construction signs on Old Mill, Lower Elwha, Camp Hayden, Place, Durrwatcher, Kreaman and Crescent Beach roads.

During the week of May 6-11, crew members cleaned up 80 pounds of roadside litter from four miles of Place Road and 120 pounds of roadside litter from three miles of Lower Elwha River Road.

Notable items found include a 40-foot camping trailer, a needle, two mattresses, a wooden cabinet, a come-along and a grill.

Crew members also picked up 13,100 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at the Deer Park rest area, 60 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Camp Hayden Road, 80 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Ennis Creek Road and 80 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Old Olympic Highway.

Crew members assisted the road department by trimming weeds from 6,578 feet of guardrail on Hoko-Ozette Road.

Crew members also put up road construction signs on Kemp Street and on Farrell and Mount Pleasant roads.

So far this year the chain gang has cleaned 103.8 miles of roadway, picked up 5,450 pounds of roadside litter, picked up 96,490 pounds of illegal dumpsite litter, trimmed 6,578 feet of guardrail and pulled or sprayed approximately 3,080 Scotch broom plants.
