Clallam: Commissioners to try again for junk vehicle ordinance

Clallam County commissioners will try again today and Tuesday to reach agreement on a proposed junk vehicle ordinance.

The commissioners will discuss the proposal during a work session today starting at 9 a.m. at the Clallam County Courthouse, 422 E. Fourth St. Port Angeles.

If they agree on four outstanding issues, the commissioners could vote on a proposed ordinance during Tuesday’s session, which begins at 10 a.m. at the courthouse.

Although no further public hearings will be held on the issue, citizens can comment on any issue during the scheduled public comment sessions.

Under the proposed ordinance, if the county receives two written complaints about a property with five or more junk vehicles visible from a road or property within 600 feet, the parcel can be declared a nuisance.

The outstanding issues involve how many junk vehicles would trigger the ordinance, the number of complaints necessary and whether the complainants must be neighbors or someone else whose property values are directly affected by the alleged junk vehicles.

The commissioners also are considering a two-tiered approach that would allow more junk vehicles on larger lots.
