CLALLAM BAY — Clallam Bay Corrections Center Superintendent Sandra Carter won’t be leaving to lead a new prison after all.
Instead, she will accept an associate superintendent position — a step backward — to stay on the West End and not have to move her middle school-aged daughter.
Carter plans to retire after almost 30 years with the state Department of Corrections and wants to remain in her Forks home.
However, she was transferred by the department to take over the McNeil Island Corrections Center near Tacoma.
Instead, she accepted the lesser job at Clallam Bay.
“I just didn’t want to uproot [her daughter] just to do it again in 11 months,” Carter said.
“Professionally, it’s a great place to work — I worked there before. I just had to weigh my priorities.”
Instead of the $7,740 a month she makes as superintendent, she will make $6,609 as associate, she said.
