PORT ANGELES — A dearth of rain and continued dry conditions has resulted in the burn ban in effect for Clallam County to be extended through Oct. 16.
The county has a regular burn ban that starts July 1 and generally ends Oct. 1, unless conditions require it to be extended.
The extension was made with the recommendation of the local fire districts and the state Department of Natural Resources.
DNR, however, lifted its burn ban Sept. 19, and Jefferson County did the same.
The burn ban in Jefferson County has not been reinstated.
The Clallam County ban applies to all fires except recreational fires in approved areas.
Those fires were allowed last week the fire danger was lowered from high to moderate.
The ban will remain in effect until conditions become wetter, said Clallam County Fire Marshal Leon Smith.
“Just so that we get more rain to wet it down,” he said.
“It’s really dry.”
