WENATCHEE – Chimacum High School made school history with a little help from Lady Luck.
The Cowboys came from behind 2-0 with two outs and two on base in the bottom of the seventh and final inning to win the Class 1A state baseball championship Saturday at Paul Thomas Field.
Chimacum beat Naches Valley 4-2 in the seventh after trailing the entire game.
This is the first team state championship in Chimacum school history.
And until the seventh inning, it didn’t look like it was going to happen.
But don’t tell that to coach Loren Bishop.
“I honestly thought we were going to make this happen,” the veteran coach said.
“We hit the ball hard, but we just happened to hit it to people. It wasn’t like we came into the seventh inning not hitting this guy.”
The previous top finishes for Chimacum was fourth place in baseball in 2003, fifth in boys basketball in 1979 and sixth in boys basketball in 2005.
“I did not feel that we were done at this point in time, I knew our kids were not done,” Bishop said about going in the seventh down by two runs.
