CHIMACUM — Jefferson County Fire District No. 1 is making some changes in light of the recent firing of its district secretary over alleged financial mismanagement.
The secretary, Denise Manly, who also served as the public information officer, was put on paid administrative leave March 17.
Commissioners fired her May 27 in response to a state Auditor’s Office investigation and based on the performance of her duties on the job, commission Chairman Jess Bondurant Jr. said.
Records obtained by the PDN show Manly allegedly owes more than $6,000 to the district.
The district commissioners decided Friday night to compose a letter to the state Auditor’s Office about the corrective action the district is taking.
No travel advances
Already the district has eliminated a pool of petty cash for employees, and soon will stop advancing money for travel expenses, Bondurant said.
In response to concerns the state office had, the district no longer pays for any employees’ personal cellular phones, Bondurant said.
