PORT ANGELES — Out of one rescinded candidacy may come another. Bill Benedict, a Clallam County sheriff’s sergeant and until recently the manager of County Commissioner Mike Chapman’s announced race for sheriff, said Tuesday that he is strongly considering a run.
“It’s not just idle talk,” Benedict said.
“I probably, at some point, need some good reason not to.”
Benedict, 55, said he would have a final answer by next Tuesday, after consulting with his family.
He also has to find a campaign manager of his own.
Chapman backed away from challenging Sheriff Joe Martin on Monday.
The Republican, who still has two years left as county commissioner, said that he couldn’t dedicate the time and energy the campaign and the office would demand.
Not surprised
Benedict said he was not surprised by Chapman’s announcement — the two had discussed his withdrawal, Benedict said — and that he understood.
“If your hearts not into it, you don’t belong there,” Benedict said.
