■ Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce — Weekly luncheon meetings are held Mondays at noon in the second-floor meeting room of the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St.
This Monday’s speaker will be Clallam County Treasurer Selinda Barkhuis.
Luncheon tickets are $15 and can be purchased from the meeting room cashier.
For those not having lunch, there is a $3 participation fee that includes a beverage.
■ Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce — Weekly luncheon meetings are held Mondays at noon at the Port Townsend Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St.
This Monday’s program will feature Allyson Brooks, historic preservation officer with the state Department of Archeology.
Lunch at $8 will be catered by Subway. The meeting sponsor will be First Federal.
■ Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce — Luncheon meetings normally are held the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at noon at SunLand Golf & Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive, Sequim.
There will not be a luncheon meeting this Tuesday because of the Thanksgiving holiday later this week.
■ Forks Chamber of Commerce — Luncheon meetings are Wednesdays at noon at JT’s Sweet Stuffs, 80 N. Forks Ave.
This Wednesday’s speaker will be Wendy Clark-Getzin, Clallam Transit general manager.
Lunch costs $8; a bowl of soup, $4.75; and a cup of soup, $4. The entree is chicken Alfredo.
■ North Hood Canal Chamber of Commerce — Representing the “Emerald Towns” of the Hood Canal, Quilcene and Brinnon, the chamber meets monthly on the third Monday of the month.
This month’s meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Brinnon Community Center, 306144 U.S. Highway 101 in Brinnon.
Featured speaker will be Elaine Jones, small-business adviser, on free services offered by the Washington State Small Business Development Center.
■ Port Angeles Business Association — Breakfast meetings are Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. at Joshua’s Restaurant, 113 DelGuzzi Drive, Port Angeles.
This Tuesday’s speaker will be Jim Haguewood, economic development planning consultant, senior partner with The One Group and former Clallam County Economic Development director.
There is a $3 minimum charge by Joshua’s for those who do not order breakfast.

Contractor earns certificate on cement siding
PORT ANGELES — Gene Fulmer, owner of A Dependable Contractor in Port Angeles,
has received a certificate from the CertainTeed Corp., a large national building products manufacturer, for completion of its advanced training program for fiber cement siding.
A member of the North Peninsula Building Association, Fulmer is a licensed general contractor with more than 30 years of experience.
He is a certified renovator with the National Center for Healthy Housing, and his company is a state-certified renovation, repair and painting firm.

Book award finalist
SEQUIM — The self-help book Papa and Me! The Perils of Patriarchy, by Sequim-based life coach Catherine Mich of Heart and Soul Works, has been named a finalist in the self-help/motivational category of USA Book News’ 2013 USA Best Book Awards.
The book was released by Balboa Press, a division of Hay House, last spring.

Credit union bake sale
PORT TOWNSEND — Staff at the Peninsula Credit Union, 1250 W. Sims Way, will present homemade baked goods and snacks at their 26th annual bake sale Friday, Dec. 13.
The event willl be open to the public as well as credit union members.
Since 1987, Peninsula Credit Union staff members have been baking to help feed the homeless.
All proceeds from bake sales are distributed to local food banks. Last year, the credit
union distributed more than $2,000.
The credit union will be accepting canned and other nonperishable food items to add to food bank contributions.
In addition, the credit union will make a cash donation to the local food banks.
Food drive set
PORT ANGELES — Wenner-Davis & Associates Insurance will be holding a monthlong food drive to benefit the Port Angeles Food Bank.
Donations can be dropped off at the firm from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from Dec. 2 to Dec. 31.
Donors will be entered into a drawing for two gift cards.
Business anniversary

Nurse Corps award
OLYMPIA — The Washington State School Nurse Corps was selected for this year’s Warren Featherstone Reid Award for Excellence in Healthcare from the state Board of Health.
With funding from Educational Service District 114 and school districts, registered nurse Marti Haley of Jefferson County Public Health, provides limited School Nurse Corps services for Port Townsend and Chimacum schools.
Registered nurse Judy McCrudden, School Nurse Corps program administrator for the service district, provides services for Quilcene and Brinnon schools.
This award is given to health care providers or facilities that exhibit exceptional quality and value in the delivery of health services.
The School Nurse Corps was created in 1999 by the state Legislature and receives annual legislative funding to ensure the presence of registered nurses in small, rural districts.
Slots on ferries
VICTORIA — British Columbia’s financially ailing ferry system will try slot machines on some of its vessels in the next two years.
The slots on ferries from a terminal north of Victoria to one southwest of Vancouver are part of a package announced by provincial Transportation Minister Todd Stone and B.C. Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan.
The package includes fare increases, route cutbacks, elimination of free senior-citizen rides and other moves designed to save $18.9 million ($17.9 million U.S.) in the next two years.
Slot machines will be installed on boats on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route, Stone said.
Restaurant introduces fall menu
SEQUIM — Using ingredients derived from local sources, Alder Wood Bistro is serving up a new fall menu with more than 85 percent of the items coming from within a 25-mile radius of the Sequim-based business.
Pork and lamb menu items come from Port Angeles, vegetables are grown at Nash’s Organic Farm, flour is freshly ground in Sequim and beef and chicken are harvested from cows and poultry raised in Chimacum.
November and December menus will feature roasted pork and braised lamb, winter squashes, yellowfoot chanterelles and porcini mushrooms, hearth-fired apple pie, Johnston’s winter squash risotto and cedar-planked black cod, to name a few.
Owned by Jessica and Gabriel Schuenemann, Alder Wood Bistro, 139 W. Alder St., has striven to be known as “the local and organic” restaurant on the North Olympic Peninsula since their 2006 opening.

Lodge to light up
PORT ANGELES — The Lake Crescent Lodge begins a new tradition of “Lighting the Lodge” with a free, open-to-the-public holiday lighting event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 30).
The historic lodge in Olympic National Park is located at 416 Lake Crescent Road, 22 miles west of Port Angeles.
Built in 1916, the lodge is the centerpiece for cabins and cottages that are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
No reservations are necessary for the lighting event, but anyone wishing to stay for dinner or overnight should phone 360-928-3211.
Santa at salon
PORT ANGELES — Sassy Kat Salon and Boutique, 105 E. First St., begins the holiday season with a visit from Santa Claus on Saturday, Dec. 7.
“Santa’s bringing Mrs. Claus in on Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.,” said Sassy Kat owner Janee Urster.
