PORT ANGELES — A research buoy that strayed from its post between Cape Flattery and Vancouver Island has been recovered, but a radio broadcast notifying mariners that the buoy won’t be in its usual spot will continue through later this month.
The University of Washington-owned buoy was discovered to be away from its position May 23, said Sue Geier, a research scientist from the UW School of Oceanography. It was recovered May 30 by the Canadian Coast Guard about 1.9 miles away.
“It wasn’t where it was supposed to be and we don’t know how it got there,” she said.
The message being broadcast by the Coast Guard alerting sailors that the buoy is missing will continue until it is back in position, said Tim Lupher, a marine information specialist with Coast Guard District 13 Office for Aids to Navigation.
“As far as the mariner is concerned, it’s not where it’s supposed to be,” he said.
