BRINNON — Goodbye Brinnon Senior Center; hello Brinnon Community Center.
Brinnon Senior Organization members joined Jefferson County Commissioner Pat Rodgers, R-Brinnon, Dan Wollam, Olympic Community Action Programs executive director, and senior organization president Evelyn Cemper on Thursday to rededicate the senior center as Brinnon Community Center.
“This community center does not belong to OlyCAP,” Wollam told about 60 people at a ceremony that included the unveiling of the center’s new sign.
“It belongs to the people of Brinnon.”
Senior-citizens programs will still exist at the community center on U.S. Highway 101 next to the OlyCAP-operated Bayshore Motel.
But as one Olympic Community Action Programs official put it: “The whole idea is to open it up to the whole community.”
Linda Haskell, OlyCAP director of development who has been heavily involved in the senior center, said the community center “is the best of both worlds.”
She and other OlyCAP officials hope youths and community residents of all ages will take advantage of the center’s many uses, and work together with the seniors already using the facility.
