BRINNON: Power cost jolt heads toward Brinnon

BRINNON — The utility that provides Brinnon with electricity says huge rate increases may be in store for residents and businesses.

Shelton-based Mason County Public Utility District No. 3, which buys all of its power from Bonneville Power Administration, might have to pass on an 80 percent retail rate increase in the fall if the energy picture doesn’t improve, assistant utility manager Pat McGary said.

That could translate into an increase of more than $550 to the $690 a typical residential customer spends on electricity each year, according to utility figures.

Already, the utility has approved a 15 percent rate increase that kicks in May 1 for the utility’s customers, including those in Brinnon and the surrounding area.

That increase means that customers who use the same amount of electricity as before would pay an extra $100 a year to power a home.
