Body of missing man recovered in Port Townsend

Official: 41-year-old apparently fell from cliff

PORT TOWNSEND — The body of a 41-year-old man was recovered Sunday afternoon 300 feet down a cliff in the area of North Beach County Park.

The man, who was not identified pending notification of next of kin, apparently fell from the top of the cliff, said Keppie Keplinger, public information officer for the Port Townsend Police Department.

East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, Jefferson County Search and Rescue and Port Townsend police, retrieved the body, which was about 100 feet above the water, Keplinger said.

The man had been reported missing to the Port Townsend police at about 8 p.m. Saturday and police searched for him in the North Beach area until about midnight, Keplinger said.

At 12:41 p.m. Sunday, a person reported seeing the body.

The Jefferson County Coroner has ordered an autopsy, Keplinger said.
