JOYCE — The summertime combination of blackberries, pie, a parade and music was celebrated at the 31st annual Joyce Daze Wild Blackberry Festival on Saturday.
As always, the festival’s centerpiece — a huge supply of wild blackberry pie, with vanilla ice cream to put on top — was on sale at the Joyce Depot Museum, located at 50883 state Highway 112 next door to the Joyce General Store in the community west of Port Angeles.
Hundreds of people lined a section of state Highway 112 for the annual parade.
The all-day festival also featured a salmon bake, vendors, music, a yelling contest and sales of slices of some 300 pies made with the sweet wild blackberries that grow in the area.
In the homemade blackberry pie contest, sponsored by the Peninsula Daily News, Caroline Belford, youth category winner, and Robin Chaussee, adult division winner, won $25 and $50, respectively, in Port Angeles Downtown Dollars, which can be used like cash at downtown restaurants and merchants.
