Beil will run again for Port commissioner

PORT ANGELES — Port Commissioner Leonard Beil announced Monday morning he will run for a second six-year term on the board of commissioners.

Beil said he wants to be part of the Port’s planning and development process for major infrastructure development and employment opportunities in the coming years.

He also wants to help develop comprehensive harbor use plans during the next two or three years, along with other private and public entities.

Beil, 82, said he also looks forward to the Port becoming a major factor in countywide economic development with a new executive director and veteran staff, he said.

Beil was elected to the three-person board in November 1999 as a reformist candidate.

He narrowly defeated incumbent Dick Foster for the District 2 seat, which represents the Port Angeles area.

The longtime educator has fought to reduce the scope and frequency of the Port commission’s closed executive sessions, increase public participation in Port decisions, develop a map detailing the Port’s numerous properties, enact audiotaping of Port meetings, and make Port meeting minutes more widely available.

Beil said his age would not be a factor in his re-election, adding he would rely upon his age and experience.
