BRINNON — School officials are seeking voter approval of a one-year tax levy in an election ending March 8.
Jefferson County election officials will mail ballots Wednesday to 716 registered mail-in voters in the Brinnon School District.
The rest of the electorate, 224 voters, will be able to cast their ballots Election Day at polls in the Brinnon Fire Hall, 272 School House Road.
To validate the election, at least 336 voters must vote on the levy.
“I would think that the election would easily be validated,” said Donna Eldridge, Jefferson County auditor.
“The majority of voters typically return the ballot.”
For the levy to pass, a 60 percent “supermajority” is required by state law.
If approved, the levy projects a tax rate of $1.45 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, bringing the school district $259,950 in revenue next year.
That number would increase from $239,950 collected during each of the past two years.
The increase is about 7 percent above the existing rate of $1.36 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, said Bob Mollerus, School Board member.
The exact rate would be determined after the Jefferson County assessor completes property valuations later this year.
