PORT TOWNSEND — The Friends of Fort Worden’s annual membership meeting will feature guest speaker Mavis Amundson, a former Peninsula Daily News reporter and author of historical books about the North Olympic Peninsula.
The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in The Commons at Fort Worden State Park from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.
It includes the presentation of awards to several individuals in recognition of outstanding volunteer work for the Friends.
Amundson edited Sturdy Folk, an oral history of the Peninsula. She wrote The Lady of the Lake, a true-crime story set in Port Angeles and Lake Crescent, and The Great Forks Fire, a true story about the 1951 forest fire that threatened the town of Forks.
She now lives in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood.
Amundson said she plans to talk about “wonderful historical stories that are hiding in plain sight on the Peninsula and about how we can find them by knowing what to look for and being open to discovery.
“I’ll have several examples, including my experience finding and amplifying on the local legend of The Lady in the Lake.”
