INDIAN ISLAND — Residents of the Port Townsend area may see smoke at Naval Magazine Indian Island next week.
It will be just a drill.
The Navy will conduct anti-terrorism training Monday through Friday.
The exercise will be the largest anti-terrorism and force-protection training operation conducted nationwide, Navy officials said.
It is designed to enhance the readiness of naval security force personnel to respond to threats to installations and units, they said.
As part of the overall exercise, the installation will gradually increase its security posture throughout the week and related events, such as increases in traffic and/or delayed access may be noticeable to the general public.
During the exercise, area residents could see smoke, created to replicate the potential aftermath of a terrorist incident.
“As always, safety is first and paramount in the conduct of this exercise and in everything done at NAVMAG,” said Cmdr. Mark Loose, the naval magazine’s commanding officer.
Jefferson County Emergency Management Office will participate at various times during the drill to execute standard notification procedures.
