PORT TOWNSEND — The first chain-store business seeking to locate in Port Townsend since Hollywood Video hopes to open in the same complex this summer.
A Quiznos sandwich shop is planned to open next door to the future Hollywood Video store in the former Port Townsend Lumber building, 2219 Sims Way, said Daniel Taylor, project manager with Kirkland-based Nicholson Investment Properties, on Tuesday.
Like with Oregon-based Hollywood Video, Quiznos is being met with a leader of the Stop Hollywood Video group that opposes chain — or “formula” — stores providing competition with Port Townsend-owned businesses.
The group persuaded the City Council to pass an urgency ordinance earlier this month that bans future chain establishments from the historic district and restricts them elsewhere.
“We have spoken with the developer [Nicholson] and they said they would now be looking for local tenants for the remaining three spaces,” said Ian Hinkle, a Stop Hollywood Video leader.
“I still question either Hollywood Video or Quiznos coming into this community when the people are so up in arms about this development.”
Denver roots
Founded in Denver in 1981, Quiznos Corp. has 3,500 restaurants worldwide in 15 countries, including the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam.
“Quiznos is the upscale sandwich concept designed for today’s busy customers who are looking for a tasty, fresher alternative to many of today’s traditional fast food restaurants,” the company’s Web site states.
