PORT TOWNSEND — Heavily discounted aviation gas is likely to make private pilots” hearts soar during the annual Jefferson County Airport Days celebration Saturday and Sunday.
Last year’s Airport Days attracted an estimated 175 aircraft that touched down on Jefferson County International Airport’s single landing strip and dotted its expansive grassy areas situated between state Highways 19 and 20.
Sponsored by Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1026 and the Port of Port Townsend, which owns the airport, the annual fly-in showcases antique, classic, modern and experimental aircraft from throughout the region.
Fuel discount
Aside from free aircraft parking and camping, the port is offering a 20-cent per gallon discount on aviation gas at the Jefferson County International Airport, said Don Taylor, Port finance director, “Which is more than we’ve done before.”
Taylor said he hopes that when the price goes up 35 cents a gallon after the airport show, pilots understand it’s minus the 20-cent discount and adds the 15 cents which was already forced on the Port by its distributor.
The Jefferson County experimental aircraft chapter includes Puget Sound-area members, including some from Everett and Poulsbo.
For two days, visiting aviators are encouraged to camp under the wings of their airplanes and browse an array of antique, classic, modern and experimental planes.
Admission for the public is also free and event hours are flexible.
Organizers hope that the airport celebration attracts an audience beyond airplane owners and pilots.
