AGNEW — The president of a volunteer group that received a large grant to preserve fish habitat on Siebert Creek says the award signals a change in attitude about smaller fish-bearing waters.
“We are encouraged, and others are encouraged, because (the grant) gives attention to small streams,” said Mary Peck, president of Pacific Woodrush, a local, non-profit group focused on protecting Siebert Creek.
“There are so many small streams needing, and wanting, attention,” Peck said.
Pacific Woodrush has been awarded a $755,000 grant from the Salmon Recovery Funding Board to purchase land and conservation easements on the lower two miles of Siebert Creek.
Peck said Clallam County, North Olympic Land Trust and North Olympic Salmon Coalition are contributing $200,000 in matching funds, although some will be through in-kind contributions rather than cash.
