Adventuress to set sail in Port Townsend Marine Science Center benefit

PORT TOWNSEND — A sail at the end of this month on the historic schooner Adventuress will go to Protection Island or around Port Townsend Bay and benefit the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.

The sail on the 101-foot ship will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. It will depart from the Northwest Maritime Center dock downtown.

Cruises are $80 per person or $75 for members of the marine science center, Burke Museum, Audubon or Washington Ornithological Society.

All proceeds for the sail, which is sponsored by the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, will benefit the center’s educational programs.

Reservations are required.

’Lifetime memory’

“Experiencing a sail on the Adventuress is a lifetime memory,” said Janine Boire, executive director for the marine science center.

“Add to that the opportunity to view the wildlife that inhabits the island — like eagles, puffins, elephant seals, plus more — and you’ve got a perfect day for the whole family.”

The Protection Island Wildlife Sanctuary, which is at the mouth of Discovery Bay, is a nesting place for sea birds, including tufted puffins.

The Adventuress — which was launched in 1913 and is owned and operated by Sound Experience of Port Townsend — will be sailed around the island unless bad weather forces the crew to stay within Port Townsend Bay.

“You can help the crew sail this historic vessel while enjoying a leisurely tour of the wildlife sanctuary or Port Townsend Bay, if the wind pipes up too strong,” the marine science center said.

“It’s a photographer’s dream come true, so don’t forget your camera.”

Marine science center naturalists will provide commentary on the island’s bird population and marine mammals.

Reservations may be made by phone at 360-385-5582 or 800-566-3932, online at www.ptmsc.org/cruises.html or by email at cruises@ptmsc.org.

Nearly 150 people provided feedback about a new Hurricane Ridge Lodge project following the 2023 fire that destroyed the original structure. Nine easels were set up with questions and notes were provided for people to express their goals for a new lodge. The earliest construction can begin is in 2028, and it would take two to three years to complete, weather permitting. (Dave Logan/for Peninsula Daily News)
