How We Ranked The Best Hangover Supplements

We decided that it was essential to look beyond the apparent marketing when considering hangover supplements. Some work better than others, and some just don’t work at all. Therefore, we needed to find a way to separate the good stuff from the bad.

Proven Ingredients

Hangovers go back millennia, and so do their cures. However, we wanted to consider products with proven ingredients as well as those that use cutting-edge science. We favored products that used effective dosages of proven ingredients.

Because alcohol affects each person differently, it’s challenging to test hangover supplements scientifically. Therefore, we favored suppliers that cited clinical trials as evidence of their products’ efficacy. Where clinical trials weren’t carried out, we gave preference to products with large numbers of positive reviews.

Manufacturer Reputation & Transparency

When comparing health-related products, the manufacturers that have a sound, long-standing reputation for the quality of their products, transparent information, and even medical advisory boards, always take preference.

Price & Value

Everybody has an idea of how much they can or wish to spend on a hangover product. With this in mind, we considered hangover supplements at various price ranges, always focusing on the best value for money at any given price point.

Ease of Use

It makes sense for hangover products to be effortless to use. If you’re taking them before or during your drinking session, you want them to be easy to pocket and take. Conversely, if you’re taking them when you’ve already got a hangover, minimum effort is what’s called for. We preferred products that were in capsule or tablet form because of the convenience they offer.

Moneyback Guarantee

Just as alcohol affects different people differently, the same is true of the various hangover solutions available. Each person will respond to different ingredients or combinations of ingredients, so there’s always a chance that a hangover supplement will fail to do what it promises. For this reason, we favored companies that showed such belief in their product that they offer a money-back guarantee to back up their claims.

Hangover Supplement Side Effects

When healthy adults use average dosage sizes, most hangover supplements can be taken without side effects. Naturally, you’re using one of these products to make yourself feel better or prevent the impact of your overindulgence.

Of course, just like with prescription medicine, you may find that you’re allergic to one or more of the ingredients.

Alternatively, it could just be a reaction because you’re not accustomed to taking this particular supplement, or the dose Isn’t the right one for you.

You shouldn’t usually expect to suffer from any significant side effects with any listed products, but there’s always the possibility.

Hangover Supplement Dosages

As our study showed, hangover supplements contain a wide variety of ingredients and are designed to work in different ways. You should always stick to the dosages recommended by the manufacturer of the product you’re using.

In general, the recommended dosages of hangover supplements are one to two capsules or a similar number of sachets.

Some hangover supplement companies recommend doubling the stated dosage for heavier drinking sessions. However, if the manufacturer of the supplement you are using doesn’t mention it, you should avoid taking more than the recommended dosage.

Scientific Evidence for Hangover Supplements

Usually, hangover pills and supplements don’t have any scientific backing to prove their claimed properties. Of course, scientific studies and clinical trials cost money and delay getting the product onto the market. Instead, they refer to third-party studies that have been carried out on the ingredients and their dosages.

In our survey of hangover supplements, we favored manufacturers who support their claims of effectiveness by providing evidence from double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials, references, and peer-reviewed research papers. The more evidence a manufacturer produces, the better the rating we gave that company’s hangover supplement.

One of the few hangover supplement companies to have published a clinical trial is Flyby. The company used fifty people who were in good health for a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. The subjects were either given a Flyby Recovery capsule or a placebo. They had a drink at their normal levels and went to bed. A week later, they repeated the test, this time with the capsules and placebos switched. The group switched to the placebo reported symptoms that were three to five times worse than previously. The other group who changed to Flyby Recovery stated that their symptoms were four times better than earlier.

The main reason for you feeling so awful when you’ve been drinking is acetaldehyde. It’s 10 to 30 times more toxic than alcohol on its own, being a byproduct of ethanol breakdown. When you drink, it builds up in your body, and while it’s not solely responsible for your hangover, it’s one of the reasons you feel so terrible. That’s why rehydration by itself doesn’t prevent hangovers.

Another commonly identified reason for hangovers is low blood sugar, which is an indirect effect of drinking. Drinking alcohol dehydrates you, which in turn causes glucose levels to drop. It-dumps situation, your body naturally looks to draw energy from elsewhere, which leads to hangover-like symptoms. Some people report that they feel better after drinking something sugary, but that’s not the whole story. If a sugar-laden drink were the complete answer to hangovers, there’d be no need for any of the pre-or post-hangover supplements in this list.

Some people also put hangovers down to the body’s natural inflammatory response. The theory is that your body identifies ethanol (the chemical name for alcohol) as an infection and behaves accordingly.

It’s widely accepted wisdom that drinking on an empty stomach it’s a bad idea. The reason is that when you have an empty stomach, approximately 20% of the alcohol you consume will pass through your stomach lining within a few minutes. The rest travels through your small intestine, taking roughly an hour to get into your bloodstream. This explains why specific effects of drinking can be felt very quickly and others a little later. This is what’s given rise to the expression that alcohol ‘sneaks up on you,’ meaning that you experience more potent effects from it than you’d initially expected.

It’s known that alcohol is a diuretic, meaning that it makes you urinate more frequently and in larger quantities. This causes your body to lose essential minerals, vitamins, and nutrients, which leads to dehydration. However, simply drinking more water is not the answer because it doesn’t replace those elements. That’s why most hangover supplements advertise their capacity to replenish your body’s mineral, nutrient, and vitamin levels.

Another area that some hangover supplements try to address is GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid). To explain briefly: GABA is a chemical produced by the brain and regulates how we experience emotional responses. When you drink alcohol, ethanol molecules attach themselves to GABA receptors, which raises the levels of GABA within the brain. This reduces the speed of nervous system signals and can cause delays in judgment and slow down functions such as moving and breathing.

As you would have seen in our list, one of the most popular hangover solutions ingredients is DHM (dihydromyricetin). That’s because it’s been shown to be effective at preventing hangovers, and that’s also why it’s an ingredient in over half of the best hangover supplements we looked at. A 2012 study of DHM and its effects concluded that it was an effective medication preventing alcohol intoxication. The test subjects found that by taking DHM, they were better equipped to avoid various symptoms of intoxication such as dependence, withdrawal, hangovers, and other adverse effects of drinking.

Even more impressive, in a 2020 study, it was found that DHM triggers several mechanisms that quickly remove alcohol from the body, helping to preserve normal liver function. This USC study also found that it can improve the quality of life of people living with liver damage.

Milk thistle extract is another commonly found ingredient in many hangover supplements. It’s been shown to support liver health in many ways, helping people live with liver disease.

Researchers discovered that milk thistle’s antioxidant properties also have hepatoprotective (liver protecting) capabilities. It can also enhance protein synthesis, antifibrotic activity, anti-inflammation effects, and block toxins at the membrane level. Among how milk thistle extract is used are combating issues with fatty liver and supporting general liver health.

Anxiety is one of the lesser-known effects of drinking alcohol that can appear before, during, or after. Studies have shown the DHM could help with many anxiety disorders, including PTSD, panic disorder, OCD, phobias, and other conditions.

It’s believed that milk thistle contains silymarin, an active ingredient that prevents toxins from attaching to liver cells. It’s also known to combat free radicals created by normal bodily functions such as drinking and processing alcohol. These free radicals are unstable molecules that have been known to cause cancer. There are several ways in which milk thistle helps your liver, but this requires more research at the time of writing.

Another way in which hangover products can combat the diuretic effects of alcohol is their electrolyte content. As mentioned earlier, when you drink, you urinate more frequently and in larger quantities. As well as losing vitamins and minerals, you also lose electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium. Failure to replenish electrolyte levels is one of the reasons that you experience a hangover. Usually, you can top up your electrolytes with a banana or a hydration drink. Still, it’s not necessarily the first thing you think of when you’re partying or suffering the effects in the morning.

Researching hangovers is a niche scientific field, partially because the hangover experience it’s so subjective. There is, however, an increasing amount of research that supports the claims made by many manufacturers of hangover prevention or recovery products.

FAQs About Hangover Supplements

We have lots of first-hand experience of hangovers, and we received lots of questions about them, drinking, and all other aspects of the effects of alcohol.

Q: What is a hangover?

A: ‘Hangover’ is the collective term for all the symptoms you experience when drinking too much alcohol. These can include some or all of the following: nausea, fatigue, weakness, aching muscles, light and sound sensitivity, sweating, stomach pain, thirst, high blood pressure, headache, and various others.

Q: Why do hangovers happen?

A: The phenomenon of hangovers is still not fully understood by scientists, so why they happen, why they are so subjective, and the processes causing them are still somewhat of a mystery. Generally, consuming alcohol causes dehydration by reducing the levels in your body of crucial vitamins and minerals. Some studies have even associated hangovers with issues such as immune response and inflammation.

Q: Why does alcohol cause a hangover?

A: There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, alcohol is a diuretic that causes you to urinate in larger quantities and more frequently. In doing so, minerals and vitamins that are essential to well-being are expelled from your body, causing their levels to drop, which elicits a reaction from your system. Secondly, your body breaks down the ethanol content in alcohol into toxic compounds, which your body naturally reacts to.

Q: What do hangovers feel like?

A: There are a plethora of hangover symptoms that people experience when they have a hangover. The most common complaints are nausea, excessive thirst, drowsiness, sweating, stomach problems, fatigue, dizziness, and headaches.

Q: What is acetaldehyde?

A: When your body breaks down ethanol, acetaldehyde is the resultant toxic compound. An increasing range of hangover supplements have ingredients that specifically target them.

Q: Why do some people get worse hangovers than others?

A: Science doesn’t completely understand why there’s such a range of hangover experiences between individuals. At the moment, it’s not possible to predict who would be more prone to hangovers. However, it’s believed the factors such as drinking habits, physiology, lifestyle habits, diet, and even genetics, can all play a part.

Q: Can genetics affect hangovers?

A: There’s still no concrete evidence of this, but some studies suggest that a genetic mutation in people of East Asian descent causes them to suffer from hangovers particularly. However, it’s also believed that other factors such as diet and lifestyle can also affect the severity of hangovers.

Q: Why do Asians get worse hangovers?

A: Studies have shown that a genetic mutation found in people of East Asian descent causes alcohol to be quickly broken down into acetaldehyde, which is carried out by the alcohol enzyme dehydrogenase. Studies have also indicated that many Asians have another genetic mutation affecting the conversion of acetaldehyde into acetic acid.

Q: Do women get worse hangovers than men?

A: Although studies show that hangovers are more common among women than men, it’s suspected that this is because the average body weight among women is lower than that among men.

Q: Do hangovers get worse with age?

A: There’s currently no research that’s been able to confirm a link between the severity of a hangover and the sufferer’s age. Studies have conflicting evidence, with some suggesting that adolescents are likely to experience hangovers, while others have indicated the opposite. Notwithstanding the amount of alcohol consumed, on current evidence, it doesn’t seem that hangovers get worse with age.

Q: Do some alcoholic drinks cause worse hangovers than others?

A: The bottom line is that alcohol causes hangovers, regardless of its form. It comes down to the amount of alcohol you’re consuming and the strength of that alcohol. For example, drinks with higher alcohol levels are more likely to lead to worse hangovers, but it also comes down to the quantity you drink. It’s also been suggested by some studies that sulfites in wine may cause hangovers. This may be why some people have worse hangovers when drinking wine than when consuming other alcoholic beverages.

Q: How can you prevent hangovers?

A: There are some simple steps you can take to help you to avoid hangovers. Taking a hangover supplement, staying hydrated, slowing down your drinking, and drinking on a full stomach, will all help prevent a miserable morning after.

Q: How do I quickly cure a hangover?

A: It’s been shown in studies that taking hangover supplements or an electrolyte formula or consuming a hydration drink can provide a quick hangover cure. You can also find purported cures from around the world, such as eating shrimp (Mexico), eating pickled plums (Japan), and eating pickled herring (Germany).

Q: Can ‘hair of the dog’ cure my hangover?

A: The theory that drinking a small amount of alcohol could cure a hangover is entirely unfounded. It’s a whimsical idea, but there’s no evidence to support it.

Q: When do hangovers peak?

A: Hangovers typically last around 24 hours, and the symptoms tend to peak when the concentration of alcohol in your blood returns to approximately zero.

Q: Are hangovers dangerous?

A: They certainly can be dangerous. When you’re suffering from a hangover, your ability to concentrate, muscle coordination, and reaction times may all be affected. When you’re in that condition, it’s likely to be hazardous to drive, operate machinery, or make crucial decisions.

Q: Does the order of drinks impact a hangover?

A: Studies have shown that for most people, the order in which you consume different kinds of alcoholic drinks has no relation whatsoever to the severity of the hangover. The alcohol content of the beverages, the speed at which you consume them, and your general condition before you start drinking all impact getting a hangover.

Q: Is a hangover just dehydration?

A: No, it’s not. If it were, you could just drink plenty of water to hydrate yourself and be hangover-free. There’s lots more going on with a hangover than just dehydration, although it’s true that one of the effects of alcohol is dehydration.

Q: Can smoking make hangovers worse?

A: As unlikely as it sounds, one study revealed that people who smoked and drank heavily simultaneously had worse hangovers than non-smokers. It’s still not understood why it occurs that way, but some believe that is because you drink more when you’re smoking.

Q: Do darker beverages cause worse hangovers?

A: There is a train of thought that darker drinks such as red wine, rum, bourbon tend to lead to worse hangovers because they contain higher concentrations of compounds known as congeners. Congeners are formed as part of the fermentation process.

Q: What’s the best hangover supplement?

A: In creating the above list of hangover supplements, we tested and rated many of the best hangover supplements currently available on the market.
