WEEKEND: Festival by Bay in Port Ludlow expands on fun

PORT LUDLOW — Arts and crafts, sailboat and kayak races, tennis and golf tournaments and a car show are among the varied activities at the Festival by the Bay today through Sunday.

Buttons for all three days cost $5 before the event and $7 at the gate of the festival on Oak Bay Road near the Port Ludlow Marina.

Once known as Port Ludlow Days, the event has been expanded this year, said Linda Karp, secretary of the Port Ludlow Festival Association.

Last year, the group decided to become a nonprofit organization “so we could benefit Jefferson County,” Karp said.

The organizations chosen to benefit from this festival are the Chimacum Schools Foundation and Olympic Community Action Programs, better known as OlyCAP.

Robert Olbrych agreed to become chairman for this year and work to “expand [the festival], make it a much larger festival,” Karp said.

“Port Ludlow Days was a small venue pretty much contained within a parking lot at the old Harbormaster Restaurant building at Port Ludlow,” Olbrych said.

“I wanted to work on a community event that brings Port Ludlow into the greater community, and to continue the generosity that this community has been known for.”

Festival attractions

Eighty-six arts and crafts vendors will offer a wide variety of works including metal, glass, wood, paint and textile products in the parking lot all three days.

A dozen musical groups will offer more than 30 performances on two stages.

The headliner is Freddy Pink, performing from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday before fireworks explode over Port Ludlow Bay at dusk.

The lead vocalist for Freddy Pink, Gordon Yancey, is a local — from Cape George, Karp said.

“This is one of the few times they’ve played on the Peninsula, and he’s excited,” she said. “We were really lucky to get them.”

An art show of the work of 33 artists will kick off today in the Harbormaster building with a wine and cheese reception.

A fun run and children’s activities are among the attractions.

Humvee at the festival

Exhibits will include a Marine Corps Humvee and Bear Cat, a Port Ludlow Fire Department Life-Safety Trailer and a 1951 Jefferson County sheriff’s patrol car.

Also planning exhibits are the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building and the Coast Guard, which will offer a helicopter sea-rescue demonstration as well.

The Etchells Regatta will sail on the Port Ludlow Bay both Saturday and Sunday.

“Blind” kayak races are Saturday.

The commemorative poster, “Cycling Fish,” by Port Townsend artist Mena Quilici will be on sale.

Buttons are for sale at the Port Ludlow Marina, Port Ludlow Golf Course, Port Ludlow Village Store, Port Ludlow Beach Club, The Inn at Port Ludlow, Dana Point Interiors and One Cut Above Salon in Port Ludlow; and the Port Hadlock QFC, the Port Townsend Safeway, QFC and the Food Co-op.
