Sheep shearing, student dramas set this week

A Shepherds’ Festival in Sequim, student productions at Peninsula College and a car show in Blyn are among the upcoming activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Shepherds’ festival

SEQUIM — The 2018 Shepherds’ Festival will get underway at 10 a.m. Monday.

Members of the public are invited to the event — which ends at 4 p.m. — at the Sequim Prairie Grange at 290 Macleay Road.

Spinning demonstrations by the North Olympic Shuttle & Spindle Guild, as well as herding dog and sheep shearing demonstrations will be featured.

Arts and crafts, as well as a petting farm will also be available.

Lamb kabobs and lamb chili will be served.

Yoga storytime

SEQUIM — Children and their caregivers are invited to Sequim Library’s Yoga Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Social media class

SEQUIM — A family-friendly information session focusing on social media will occur from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The free event, “Food, Fun, Family, and Fones: Exploring Social Media Together,” will be at the Sequim Library at 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Adults can learn the basics of social media and have a youth teach them something, while children can discuss social media with their peers.

A light dinner will be provided.

Attendees are asked to bring their phones.

Story Slam

SEQUIM — “Story Slam — Learning Curve” is set for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 S. Sequim Ave.

The cost is $10 for general admission and $8 for OTA or Story People of Clallam County members.

Tellers will be selected at random to step to the mic to tell a six-minute true, personal story on the theme.

The event is hosted by Olympic Theatre Arts and the Story People of Clallam County.

Plant clinic

SEQUIM — Members of the public are invited to ask master gardeners about gardening from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Master gardeners will be available Thursdays at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road to answer questions regarding identification, pest and disease control, and vegetable gardening.

Car show

BLYN — The Peninsula Dream Machines will hold its Show & Shine car show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is free to the show at 7 Cedars Casino at 270756 U.S. Highway 101, although donations for the Port Angeles and Sequim food banks will be appreciated.

Goodie bags will be given to the first 100 cars.

Donations will be split equally between the two food banks, according to a news release.

College dramas

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College’s drama production students’ presentations of “Hot Sex America Zombie Weekend” and “A Dollar” will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The student-led productions will continue through June 2 and June 7 to 9, all at 7:30 p.m., at the college’s Little Theater at the Port Angeles campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Performances also include a preview at noon Wednesday and a matinee at noon, Wednesday, June 6.

Performances are free and open to the public.

“Hot Sex America Zombie Weekend” — an original play by Peninsula College English Professor Michael Calvin Mills — is a musical set in modern day New Orleans and follows a pair of FBI agents looking to bust a criminal scheme.

David Pinski’s “A Dollar” is set in the roaring 1920s and centers around group of lost travelers in the forest who don’t know which direction to follow. The show illustrates how greed can take over the rational mind.

Gardening advice

PORT ANGELES — Members of the public are invited to ask master gardeners about vegetable gardening from 10 a.m. to noon Monday.

Master gardeners will be available Mondays as they tend their plots at the Fifth Street Community Garden at 328 E. Fifth St. during the growing season to chat.

PORT ANGELES — Beginners’ couples dance lessons are set at the Mount Pleasant Grange at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College will screen the documentary “Wasted! The Story of Food Waste” at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The public is invited to the free showing at the college’s Maier Performance Hall at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

A panel discussion of local experts working on programs targeting food waste and recovery will follow the film.

Dance lessons

FORKS — Dance lessons will be offered at the Forks Congregational Church at 7 tonight.

The lessons at the church at 280 Spartan Ave., are for people of all skill levels. Lessons are free.

Some donate to the instructors’ gas expenses but a donation is not required.

Each week begins with a review of the previous week’s lesson.

The lessons are held Fridays at the church.

Attendees will be led by trip leader Monica Fletcher to Battery Hill and listen for bird songs and check for the activities of migrant birds along the way.

Glaciers presentation

PORT TOWNSEND —The Jefferson Land Trust will host Bill Baccus for a discussion about the glaciers of the Olympic Mountains at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The event at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave., is free and open to the public.

Baccus is an Olympic National Park naturalist who has studied the park’s 311 glaciers since 2010, according to the news release.

His talk will focus on how the glaciers have changed in response to a warming climate.

QUILCENE — The Quilcene-Brinnon Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale, bake sale, raffle and silent auction from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Masonic Hall, 170 Herbert St.

This is the club’s annual fundraiser.

Proceeds from the sale will support grants to local charitable causes such as the Quilcene and Brinnon Food Banks, the Children’s Weekend Nutrition program, Center Valley Animal Rescue and others.

Mount Walker hike

QUILCENE — A hike along the Mount Walker Trail has been planned by the Olympic Chapter Washington Native Plant Society for Thursday.

To begin the hike attendees will meet at the Haines Place Park & Ride, 440 12th St., at 8 a.m. to carpool, or meet at the trailhead on U.S. Highway 101, south of Quilcene, according to a news release.

The trail offers a Douglas fir and western red cedar forest and an abundance of Pacific rhododendron, tiger lilies, Scouler’s harebell, pipsissewa and rein orchids.

At an estimated four-mile round-trip walk the trail also boasts a 2,000-foot elevation gain to a twin summit with panoramic views of Port Townsend Bay and the Olympic Mountains, according to the release.
