Flea markets, plant sales and celebrations of the opening day of boating season along with many other activities are planned across the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

Spring flea market

PORT ANGELES — A spring flea market benefit for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula is planned on Saturday and Sunday.

The flea market will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Eagles Aerie 483, 110 Penn St., Port Angeles.

The event will have “live music, food and fun for the whole family,” said event organizer and Peninsula Daily News music columnist John Nelson.

Donations for the flea market are being accepted.

Magic of Cinema

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College’s Magic of Cinema film series will screen “The End of the Line,” a documentary on the impact of overfishing on oceans at 7 tonight.

Among the topics it investigates are the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by the increasing demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in an overpopulation of jellyfish; and the implications of a world with no fish.

It also contains disturbing images that may bother sensitive film audience members.

The film will be shown in Peninsula College’s Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

A short discussion led by Peninsula College faculty Barbara Blackie and Bruce Hattendorf will immediately follow the showing of the film.

Admission is $5 or $1 with a Peninsula College student ID.

Kiwanis sale set

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Kiwanis, along with other area Kiwanis groups, will hold an annual Garage Sale Fundraiser on Saturday.

The garage sale will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wilder Building, next to Frontier Bank, 1212 E. First St., Port Angeles.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Kiwanis Camp for developmentally and physically challenged children and adults on Beausite Lake in Jefferson County.

Show and shine

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Mustang Club will host its 27th annual Participants Choice Show N’Shine at the Gateway Transit Center, corner of Front and Lincoln streets, on Sunday.

Registration for the car show will begin at 9 a.m. with the public invited to view cars and swap stories with fellow motor enthusiasts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ford Mustangs and Mercury Cougars will be featured. Non-Mustang Ford vehicles and non-Ford vehicles will be on site as well.

Tournament organizers are hoping to break last year’s record of 140 cars.

Registrations are still being accepted; cost is $20.

The club also will host a Pony Trail drive starting at Price Ford Lincoln Mercury, 1527 E. Front St., at 11 a.m. Saturday.

A 2010 Ford Shelby Super Snake Mustang with 725 horsepower will participate in the ride.

History tales

PORT ANGELES — Journalist and author Lynda Mapes will speak at the Clallam County Historical Society’s May History Tales presentation.

The talk will be held in the Port Angeles City Council Chamber, 321 E. Fifth St., at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

She will discuss the discovery of Tse-whit-zen.

Mapes covered the story of the graving yard controversy and the archaeological find for The Seattle Times.

She has written two books, The Spirit of the Land and Breaking Ground.

Garden club sale

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Garden Club will conduct its annual plant sale at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Club members will share annuals, perennials, vegetable starts, house plants, bulbs, tubers and shrubs from their own gardens.

They also will sell garden art and craft projects including painted rocks, stained glass sun catchers, concrete garden leaves and hypertufa plants.

A raffle will be held.

Land trust work party

PORT ANGELES — North Olympic Land Trust will hold a volunteer work party at a land trust-owned property at the end of Siebert Creek Road, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Work will include construction of a small fence, sign installation, trail brushing, and scotch broom eradication.

Participants should bring work gloves, water and snacks.

Pancake breakfast

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Peninsula Young Life will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser at First Baptist Church, 105 W. Sixth St., from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The all-you-can-eat breakfast will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon and beverages.

The cost for the breakfast is $5 per person.

A family pass for two adults and two children younger than 12 can be purchased for $12.

Tickets may also be purchased at the door.

Proceeds will fund scholarships members to attend a Young Life camp this summer.

Author to speak

PORT ANGELES — Seattle author David Laskin will talk about his new book, The Long Way Home, An American Journey from Ellis Island to the Great War, and sign copies at the Port Angeles Library tonight.

The talk and book signing will begin at 7 p.m. in the Carver Room at the library at 2210 S. Peabody St.,

In The Long Way Home, Laskin tells the stories of 12 immigrants.

PORT ANGELES — Stories for Toddlers will be told at the Port Angeles Library this morning.

SEQUIM

Opening day

SEQUIM — The Sequim Yacht Club will celebrate the beginning of the boating season and the club’s 35th year on Saturday.

The event will be the club’s 30th opening day celebration during the 25th anniversary of the John Wayne Marina at 2577 W. Sequim Bay Road.

A flag ceremony and commissioning of the club is set at 1:30 p.m. at the marina flagpole.

Club officers will be in uniform. A bagpiper will pipe in the colors. The fleet will be blessed.

At 2 p.m., boats will parade and do maneuvers in Sequim Bay.

Participants are asked to wear red, white and blue and to pack picnic lunches.

Poetry discussion

SEQUIM — The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will host poet, essayist and nature writer Tim McNulty at 2 p.m. Saturday.

McNulty will hold a conversation about one of his favorite poems, “The Song of Wandering Aengus,” by Irish poet William Butler Yeats.

“It’s one of Yeats’ best-loved poems, drawing on Celtic mythology, love and a mystic quest,” said McNulty.

Copies of “The Song of Wandering Aengus” are available at the Sequim Library and will be available at the door.

Home Depot event

SEQUIM — The Home Depot, 1145 W. Washington St., will hold a community event called “Mayhem” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event will feature giveaways, games, prizes, free workshops and community information tables.

The grand prize is a patio set, barbecue and a fire pit valued at more than $500.

Parents can take their children to participate in a free child identification program, which includes a video of the child, a DNA swab, fingerprinting and a dental impression, which are put in a kit and given to the parents

Free water testing will be given and customers can speak with specialists and sign up for a free home energy assessment.

Home Depot will give away popcorn and cotton candy, and Blue Flame BBQ will sell meals.

Clallam plant sale

SEQUIM — A selection of native plants, trees, shrubs, grasses and ground covers will be available at the Clallam County Master Gardener Spring Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The sale will be held at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road.

Native plants include hemlock, elderberry, grand fir, western red cedar and red osier dogwood.

Vegetables include rhubarb, tomato starts and lettuce.

A variety of rhododendrons, sedum, hostas and other perennials will be available.

Half wine barrels, donated by Camaraderie Cellars, vintage gardening books and other unique gardening items will be for sale, and a drawing will be held for gardening supplies.

Proceeds from the spring plant sale support the Clallam County Master Gardeners.

Boys & Girls art show

SEQUIM — An art show of pencil drawings by members of the Sequim Boys & Girls Club opens Saturday at The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave.

Ranging in age from 6 to 11, the children have been working on drawing with volunteer Sam L. Sutherland for several months.

Some club members will be present at The Buzz during the First Friday Art Walk on Friday, May 7.

PORT TOWNSEND — More than 60 vendors are expected at the 2010 JeffCo Home Show this weekend.

The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

The them of the show, presented by the Jefferson County Home Builders Association, is “Remodel Your Home: It’s a Wise Investment.”

Opening day

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Yacht Club will hold a boat parade on Port Townsend Bay at 12:45 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to the yacht club, the parade will include other boating organizations like the Sea Scouts, the high school sailing team, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Point Wilson Power Squadron, as well as the boats Martha and Alcyone.

The parade will begin at the Port Townsend Ferry Dock and ends at the Northwest Maritime Center

The Northwest Maritime Center will announce the craft as they boat past the center.

Birding cruises set

PORT TOWNSEND — A Port Townsend Marine Science Center boat tour focusing on the spring bird migration is scheduled Saturday.

“For 17 years we’ve featured Protection Island as the primary destination for our wildlife cruises,” said Anne Murphy, executive director for the science center.

“We may also explore other parts of the central Salish Sea too, depending upon the weather. “

The tour will be aboard Puget Sound Express’ Glacier Spirit enclosed motor yacht.

It will depart from Point Hudson Marina in Port Townsend at 1 p.m. and return about 4 p.m.

Tickets are $55 per person, or $50 for members of the marine science center, the Burke Museum, or the Audubon or Washington Ornithological societies. The fee is $10 less for children 2 to 10 years old.

Songlines benefit set

PORT TOWNSEND — The PT Songlines Choir will host a benefit concert at Rosewind Common House, corner of Umatilla Ave. and Haines St., at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Proceeds will help three Ugandan sisters continue their education.

The sisters and their mother befriended 2000 Port Townsend High School graduate Amanda Millholland during her Peace Corps Service in Uganda.

The mother is now ill with AIDS and unable to provide money for schooling.

Museum opens

PORT TOWNSEND — The Commanding Officer’s Quarters Museum at Fort Worden State Park will begin summer operation Saturday.

The museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through September.

A special exhibit on the Spanish-American War will be featured.

The exhibit is centered around a collection of wartime letters written by Frederick Berger, who was in the Philippines, to his mother.

Berger was a career Army officer who lived in Port Townsend for many years.

The museum is operated by the Jefferson County Historical Society.

Admission is $4 for adults, free for historical society members.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Saturday Port Townsend Farmers Market will open for the season at 9 a.m. Saturday in uptown Port Townsend at Lawrence and Polk streets.

Fundraiser today

PORT TOWNSEND — A community fundraiser Jump-A-Thon will raise money for school portable equipment and playground improvements today.

The Jump-A-Thon will be from 11:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the YMCA gym at Mountain View Commons, 1925 Blaine St., Port Townsend.

Participants are asked to donate $5 or more, and are eligible for door prizes, including a one-month membership in the Port Townsend Athletic Club and gift certificates to local restaurants.

All proceeds will go to the PTA to purchase play equipment and pay for field improvements.

Curry welcomed home

PORT TOWNSEND — A community potluck to welcome home Bill Curry, skipper of the Concordia which sank in February, is planned Sunday.

The potluck will be at 3 p.m. at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock.

The Concordia sank about 300 miles off the coast of Brazil on Feb. 17. The 64 students and crew members aboard survived, and Curry is credited with saving them, the Port Townsend Leader said.

The show will feature Chinese puppeteers Yuqin Wang and Zhengli Xu and their daughter, Brenda Xu.

They will perform a show that blends high art, technical skill and slapstick comedy.

It is based on a 1,000-year-old tradition.

Root fungus

CHIMACUM — The Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Washington Native Plants Society will host a presentation on root fungus Saturday.

The event is one of two the chapter has organized in observance of Native Plant Appreciation Week declared by Gov. Chris Gregoire from April 25 to Saturday.

The presentation will be at 10 a.m. at Kul Kah Han Garden, located at H.J. Carroll Park in Chimacum.

Marrowstone Island resident Dennis Burk will present “Fungi that Form Symbiotic Relationships with Plants.”

Mycorrhizal fungi increase a plant’s access to nutrients, minerals and water, thereby reducing the need for artificial fertilizers and irrigation.

Native plants and packets of mycorrhizal fungi will be available for purchase.

Proceeds from the sale will support the native plant demonstration garden.

FORKS — The Forks Library plans a bilingual story time and celebration today and a session of reading books to a golden retriever Saturday.

At 4 p.m., the library will host a game of la loteria and la pinata.

Children can read books to Tally the Therapy Dog at the Forks Library on Saturday.

FORKS — The West End Sportsmen’s Club annual Kids Fishing Day will be Sunday.

The Bochachiel Rearing Ponds in Forks have been filled with trout for children to catch between 6:30 a.m. and noon.
