PENINSULA SPOTLIGHT: Second Weekend festivities kick off today with music, art

PORT ANGELES — “Roots in a blender” and “Gold Dust from Heaven” will start the Second Weekend festivities in downtown Port Angeles tonight, courtesy of a rocking foursome and a solo artist.

It’s Second Friday Art Rock, aka 2FAR, starring Bound to Happen, that foursome playing the above-mentioned blend of roots music, at 8 p.m. at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St.

Frontman Kevin Lee Magner, his singing sister Mary Magner, guitarist Scott Bradley and rhythm sectioners Kurt Jensen and Terry Smith will provide a soundtrack, while Sage Parent paints.

Parent has already named his canvas “Glory. Gold Dust from Heaven,” and 2FAR-goers will have the chance to watch its images develop through the evening.

Dancing and enjoyment of Bar N9ne’s food and drink are also encouraged, while the cover charge is a mere $3.

On Saturday night, the Second Weekend events rev up once more, with art parties from 5 p.m. till 8 p.m. at the following venues:

■   Studio Bob, upstairs at 1181/2 E. Front St., where “Every Stupid Holiday” is the one-woman show starring Sequim painter, schoolteacher and horsewoman Melissa Klein. The exhibition includes Klein’s “crackle-milk” paintings plus note cards and photographs. After Saturday night’s opening party, the art display will stay open from 1 p.m. till 6 p.m. daily through Dec. 24.

Also at Studio Bob, starting at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the SuperTrees band will play rock ’n’ roll, reggae, funk and soul. The group, featuring Steve Koehler, Dan Lieberman, Declan Westcott and Rudy Maxion, will dish out covers plus new original songs such as “Northern Lights” and “Abeja,” which means honeybee in Spanish. Bassist Maxion, who’s new to the band, “is a real pro, very flexible, fun to play with and funky,” Lieberman said.

■   The Art Up Front gallery, adjacent to Studio Bob, highlights functional and artistic ceramics by Cindy Elstrom.

■   The Landing mall’s upstairs gathering room at 115 E. Railroad Ave. is given over to Art Is a Gift, the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center’s annual show and sale. One-of-a-kind gifts fashioned by Pacific Northwest artists are available at a variety of prices.

■   The Landing Art Gallery, downstairs in The Landing mall at 115 E. Railroad Ave., is the venue for Peninsula College’s 50th anniversary photographic exhibition.

In this show, German-born graphic artist and photographer Harry von Stark, now of Quilcene, highlights the many facets of campus architecture.

The display stays up through December, and all of its works are for sale, with proceeds benefiting Peninsula College Foundation scholarships and programs.

■   The Waterfront Art Gallery, 120 W. First St., features award-winning artist and teacher Irene Logry’s pastels and oil paintings through December.
