PENINSULA SPOTLIGHT: First ‘Second Weekend’ of summer

PORT ANGELES — The days are longer and the weather is finally warm enough for an evening stroll, a perfect combination for attending this weekend’s Second Weekend Art Events in Port Angeles.

The weekend kicks off with late openings at galleries and venues downtown, including a new location for Art Rock and a new musical event at Studio Bob.

It continues Saturday with the weekly guided downtown sculpture tour.

On Sunday, the action includes the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, which is opening the summer exhibit, “Safe Harbor.”

Art Rock move

Art Rock, the live music and art event that follows the art gallery walk tonight, is moving from Studio Bob back to its former location, although it has a new name.

The Lyre’s Club was remodeled and reopened in May as the upscale Club N9ne at 229 W. First St.

The evening’s theme is “Twirl,” and is all about “reconnecting to childhood sensations and unlocking doors to creativity and problem-solving,” according to the organizers.

Port Angeles band Rate Limiting Step will provide the music, while artist Melissa Klein will be creating art on site.

The art party starts at 8:30 p.m. with Klein creating art and the music starts at 9 p.m. There is a $3 cover charge, 21 and older only.

Rate Limiting Step plays a mix of rock and roll, R&B, funk, original tunes and a little bit of country and features Dan Lieberman on lead guitar, Steve Fradkin on drums and Paul Stehr-Green on bass guitar

(The name comes from a chemistry term for the slowest step in a chemical process.)

Klein’s mission as an artist is to be a “mythmaker and storyteller, inspired by her continuing journey as a life-long learner,” she said.

Her work has appeared in magazines and books and on murals.

Most recently she mentored local students in developing the Fish on the Fence project for the Feiro Marine Center at The Landing mall.

Studio Bob, at 118 1/2 E. Front St., will host a “Bring Your Own Performance” event from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. today.

Performers of all types are welcome to participate, from musicians and poets to storytellers and dancers. The event is free.

Phone Stokes at 415-990-0457 to secure a performance time.
