SEQUIM — Sequim’s Olympic Theatre Arts is collaborating with area artists to promote the 2018-19 live theatre season.

OTA put out a call to local artists in March, asking for samples of work for review. OTA then paired selected artists with plays that best suited the artists’ styles and interests, asking them to create original works of art to capture the essence of the performances.

Artists chosen for the season include Jim Bradrick, Amélie Mantchev, Catherine Mix, Sadie Perry, Jeff Tocher, David Willis and Richard Workman.

The artwork they are creating will be first shown at the invitation-only Season Unveiling event for members and season ticket subscribers next Sunday, June 10, where play choices for the 2018-19 season at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., also will be announced and season tickets will go on sale.

“It’s a fantastic idea … to combine the visuals of painting with the feeling you get from the reading the play,” said Tocher, who also paints to live music at the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts and other events.

“It’s a different way to look at art when you have to react to a play,” said Willis, who is also active in OTA production set design.

Perry, who has returned from the Seattle art scene and did artwork for local theatre productions for Port Angeles High School when she went to school there, added” “I think it’s a great opportunity to reach out to the community. It’s fun to be part of something like that again.”

Each play’s original artwork also will be displayed in the Gathering Hall during the run of the performance the work represents, and will be raffled off at the end of the run, to the benefit of the artist.
