JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC: New venue, blues fest add to Peninsula scene

THIS WEEK WE have music from a new venue hosting a grand opening in Joyce, Centrum’s Blues in the Clubs in Port Townsend and places in between to whet your live music palette.

Port Angeles

• Tonight at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, The Sundowners host a jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. These fellas really know how to have fun!

The Jimmy Hoffman Band returns to its roots Friday and Saturday, dishing out some tasty country rock along with sides of country soul and Jimmy’s own sweet originals from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $3 cover.

• The Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 five miles west of Port Angeles, has Barry Barnett with the Sunday Jam from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Jason Mogi is on summer hiatus and will not be appearing every Wednesday

• At Wine on the Waterfront, 115 Railroad Ave., blues legend Thom Davis plays at 7 p.m. Saturday. Cover is $3.

• On Saturday at the Port Angeles Farmers Market at The Gateway center, Front and Lincoln streets, Howly Slim performs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Dave and Rosalie Secord and the whole Luck of the Draw gang are back at the Fairmount Restaurant, on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles, from 6 to 9 p.m. with the Tuesday acoustic jam. Don’t be left out!

• On Friday night, The Veela Cafe, 133 E. First St., has Jim Lind providing both rock and country, fast and slow, from his impressive repertoire, at 7:30 p.m.

• Every Tuesday evening, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all adults 45 years plus from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets. $5 cover, first-timers free!

Joyce

• On Saturday, celebrate Joyce Daze and the grand opening of Salt Creek Restaurant and Lounge, state Highway 112 and Camp Hayden Road, with The Jimmy Hoffman Band from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jimmy and the boys will open this new venue in grand country style. $5 cover.

Sequim

• Tonight, don’t miss the jam hosted by Chantilly Lace at the Oasis Sports Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Any Thursday night you’ll find some of the best jammers from your favorite bands joining in the fun. Classic rock and country from the ’50s and ’60s, blues and pop from later decades are all in the broad repertoire honed over 35 years. Jammers come in early and sign in on the sign-up sheet.

On Friday, Skidder Hill plays blues, old-time and country from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Next Wednesday, Final Approach lands with boomer music from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• Howly Slim will be at Las Palomas Mexican Restaurant, 1085 E. Washington St., on Saturday at 5 p.m.

• Howly Slim also performs at Alderwood Bistro, 139 Alder St., every Tuesday, weather permitting, at 5 p.m.

• At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas hosts the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

• On Friday at Stymies Bar and Grill at Cedars at Dungeness, Woodcock Road, Lori and Clipper (think The Works) entertain with music and vocals from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• On Friday, at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, in the Club Seven Lounge, dance to Sway, a party band with an Asian twist from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday, dance to Sway from 7 p.m. to 10:45 p.m.

On Sunday, waltz, fox trot and more to the Olympic Express Big Band from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Monday, jazz it up with Mary Lou Montgomery and Nostalgia from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Hadlock

• Tonight at the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., Buzz Rogowski plays at 6 p.m.

On Friday, Jess plays your favorite tunes on the piano, from the Beatles to Billy Joel, at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Jack Reid plays at 6 p.m. You may not know Jack, but you know his songs.

On Sunday, Greg Vinson plays his unique style of beatnik jazz at 6 p.m.

Every Tuesday, Jess styles on the piano at 6 p.m.

Port Townsend

• Tonight at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., enjoy the jazz of Chuck Easton, George Radebaugh, Willy Ingersoll and Tim Sheffel at 7 p.m. $4 cover.

Friday is highlighted by three great programs.

First, at 5 p.m., is Duvo, a Hungarian national act and traditional string band. $12 cover.

At 7 p.m., Jim Nyby and the F Street Band play New Orleans-style blues, rock and roots. $5 cover.

At 9 p.m., Centrum’s Blues in the Clubs presents Robert Jones and Phil Wiggins followed by Jeff Scott at 10 p.m. and at 11 p.m. Scott is joined by Wiggins. (Festival wristband is required)

On Saturday, Jim Nyby and the F Street Band again play at 7 p.m. $5 cover.

The blues festival continues at 9 p.m. with Nat Reese, followed by Robert Jones at 10 p.m. and The Ebony Hillbillies at 11 p.m. (Festival wristbands required.)

On Wednesday, Phil Berkowitz and the Dirty Cats Blues Band play solid rhythm and danceable grooves that stay true to ’50s New Orleans rhythm and blues, West Coast jump and hard-hitting Chicago blues. $10 cover.

• On Friday, The Blues Counselors play at Port Townsend Brewing, 330 10th St., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• On Sunday, Chuck Easton plays jazz from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Next Wednesday, the renowned Ian McFerran plays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• On Saturday, the rock ‘n’ roll band at the Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., is Perfectly Flawed, and they will rock you beginning at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

• Castle Key Restaurant, Seventh and Sheridan streets, is participating in the Country Blues in the Clubs on Friday with three acts at 9 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Annieville Blues, Daryl Davis and Jerron and Washboard Chas will fill the slots.

On Saturday, Ben Payton, Annieville Blues and Daryl Davis fill the slots, in that order.

• On Friday at the Boiler Room, 711 Water St., festival artists Jerron Paxton, George Rezendes and Ben Payton play at 9 p.m. No cover.

On Saturday, festival artists Russel Rodrigues, Steve James and Jeff Scott play at 9 p.m. No cover.

Community concerts

• On Saturday, classically trained Rachel Ries brings some “Prairie Swing and city folk” music stylings to Battery Bankhead, Fort Flagler State Park, Marrowstone Island, at 7 p.m.

Next Tuesday in Sequim, Howly Slim and Da Boys play some island swing originals at the James Center for the Performing Arts at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In Port Angeles’ Concert on the Pier series next Wednesday, The Soulshakers play down and gritty blues from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Bring chairs and your favorite fur-lined wool coat.
