JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Tune or two of the season on tap for local scene

LIVE MUSIC, INCLUDING special holiday tunes, abound all across the Peninsula this week.

If you’re not in the spirit of the impending holiday yet, catch some live music, and you’re bound to hear a tune or two of the season.

Ho, ho, ho!

Port Angeles

■ Tonight at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, come on down for Jerry’s Country Jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. If country’s your style, come and dance or play plugged or unplugged.

On Friday, the Jimmy Hoffman Band returns for an appreciation performance in honor of Gary Blevins and his many contributions to the local community. Stop in, say hi, give thanks and dance from 7 p.m. to midnight.

■ On Friday, the Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 five miles west of Port Angeles, is gonna be rocking to the classic rock of Mister Sister from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. This band will energize your dancing muse. $5 cover.

On Tuesday, Ches Ferguson stops by for some picking and grinning at 7 p.m.

■ On Friday, Charlie Ferris returns to Wine on the Waterfront at The Landing mall at 115 Railroad Ave. with his Melodies and Memories Show with some new songs from the ’50s and ’60s, plus 20 or so Christmas favorites. Charlie’s angels will be there from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ On Friday at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., three bands, the Morels, Kiss My Bluegrass and the Madronas, perform starting at 9 p.m. $3 cover.

Every Monday, Justin Scott Rivet plays an acoustic mix of jazz, blues, rock country, and originals from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Friday, Les Wamboldt and Olde Tyme Country perform at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Christina Gross invites you to come and jam with other musicians from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Amateurs welcome.

On Tuesday, Dave and Rosalie Secord and the Luck of the Draw Band play old-time music with guest Just Four Fun for an old-fashioned good ol’ time from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ Every Tuesday evening at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all adults 45 years and older from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover, first-timers free.

■ On Wednesday at Dupuis Restaurant, 256861 U.S. Highway 101, Bob and Dave play blues with a brew and barbecue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sequim and Blyn

■ On Friday at the Oasis Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., the Discovery Bay Pirates play at 5 p.m., followed by Jeff Tocher’s birthday party with the band Redwing at 8 p.m.

On Tuesday, stop in for some Irish therapy with Irish Session at 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Blue Hole Quintet is back from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Friday, Locos Only with Kevin Lee Magner and the dad/daughter team of Scott and Elora Bradley perform for First Friday Art Walk at Damiana’s Best Cellars, 113 W. Washington St., at 6 p.m.

■ Also performing for the First Friday Art Walk are Barb Priebe and Waynne Shields bringing their music to the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

■ Ming’s Buffet, 10181 Old Olympic Highway, presents seasonal stylings by Judy Clark on Wednesdays and Thursdays in December from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Fridays and Saturdays, enjoy the holiday expressions on the keyboard of Sandy Lockwood from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas and Victor Reventlow host the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

■ On Friday at Stymie’s Bar & Grill at Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, Two Miles High performs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at Club Seven Lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, the Cody Rentas Band plays blues and rock from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday, Billy Shew plays more blues and rock from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Sunday, enjoy the Timebenders from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

On Monday, join Barry Burnett and world-class drummer Tom Svornich for We Be Jammin’, so bring your ax or tickled tonsils and join the fun from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Port Hadlock

■ On Saturday, the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., features Mick and Barry performing folk and country songs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Townsend

■ Tonight at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., Bound to Happen plays roots, rock, blues, rockabilly and country at 7:30 p.m. $15 cover.

On Friday, Tacoma-based six-piece band Bump Kitchen pumps out hard-hitting funk and smooth soul at 8 p.m. $8 in advance, $10 at the door.

On Saturday, the Jazz Gals, backed by a who’s-who of Port Townsend musicians, sing the classics at 7:30 p.m. $6 cover.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., musicians gather in a fundraiser for Sylvia’s pooch.

■ On Saturday, Cort Armstrong and Blue Rooster perform country blues, old-time country, ragtime, bluegrass and originals at Sirens Pub, 823 Water St., from 9 p.m. to midnight. $5 cover.

■ On Saturday at Castle Key, Seventh and Sheridan streets, enjoy the jazz of Heather Keizer with Steve Christofferson from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. $10 cover.

■ Steve Grandinetti plays guitar at the Owl Sprit Cafe, 218 Polk St., today and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ Tonight at the Undertown, 211 Taylor St., hoot it up with the Crow Quill Night Owls and its ragtime, jazz and country blues, at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, you can take a taste of Brazil with Combo Choro at 2 p.m. Later in the evening, the Blue Crows swing by with a little old-time swing and blues at 7 p.m.

■ Every Monday, Trevor Hanson plays guitar at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ Steve Grandinetti plays and sings at the Northwest Maritime Center Cafe, Port Townsend, on Thursdays and Friday from noon till 2 p.m.

High notes

■ During the holiday season, we tend to forget the needs of our furry friends at the Clallam County Humane Society. Therefore, Dave and Rosalie Secord have gathered up eight bands, a Smuggler’s Landing beer garden, silent auction, raffle and more Saturday at The Landing mall, Port Angeles, from noon to 8 p.m. to raise funds.

The society will have pups and kittens to adopt as well.

Donations of dry dog and cat food, nonclumping kitty litter, paper towels, bleach, surgical gloves and cash would be appreciated. I’ll be doing some of the hosting, so I’ll see you there. Remember: Pets are people, too.

■ The Turner Brothers Band will perform its new and classic high-energy rock, blues, funk and country in a benefit for 10-year-old Violet O’Dell at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The event includes a spaghetti feed and silent auction. O’Dell is stricken with an inoperable brain tumor.

■ On Friday at the Highway 20 Road House, 2510 Sims Way, Port Townsend, Buck Ellard will be playing solo in a dinner show from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., covering country standards and his own originals on guitar and fiddle.

■ On Saturday, the contra dance at Black Diamond Community Hall, 1942 Black Diamond Road, Port Angeles, features Lisa Ornstein and Don Compton with Joe Michaels doing the calling from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. $6 for adults, $2 for those younger than 18.

■ On Saturday at the Quimper Grange square dance, 1219 Corona St., Port Townsend, the Rose Street Ramblers will more than ramble through a high-octane set of Southern dance tunes from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., with Amy Carroll calling. Adults $6, youths $3.
