JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Spring into live music on the Peninsula

SPRING HAS FINALLY sprung, so get out of that recliner and throw off that winter blanket and get out and dance or, at least, tap your toes or move to the groove of live music.

Somewhere in the following list of gigs across the Peninsula, you will surely find some live music to soothe your soul or maybe cut a rug to.

Port Angeles

■ Tonight at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, the Sundowners will host a jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. These fellas really know how to have fun!

On Friday and Saturday, Castaways will be rockin’ country style to the tunes of the Jimmy Hoffman Band from 8 p.m. to midnight. It covers classics to contemporary country with some classic rock, blues and originals that’ll get your happy feet on the floor.

■ Like the blues? Then head out to the Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 five miles west of Port Angeles, on Saturday night and boogie to the Soulshakers from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Mike Pace’s guitar and Cindy Lowder’s down and dirty vocals set this band apart. Cover.

On Sunday, Chantilly Lace hosts the Junction Jam from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Next Wednesday, banjo craftsman Jason Mogi and bassist Paul Stehr-Green play from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at Wine on the Waterfront, 115 Railroad Ave., the rhythms of Africa will come alive with a performance by Tyler Richart and Kora Kana at 8 p.m. Tyler blends sensuous African rhythm with American roots stylings. Cort and Kia Armstrong will accompany. $3 cover.

On Saturday, the new duo of Jason Mogi and Paul Stehr-Green will make their debut with a night of new tunes, covers, Appalachia, jam band improvisations and classic rock ‘n’ roll at 8 p.m. $3 cover.

■ On Friday at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., All About Me (aka Lorrie and Clipper, aka the Works) rocks from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Monday, Dave and Rosalie Secord’s guest will be Ron Munro at Smuggler’s Landing, 115 Railroad Ave., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Friday, Chuck Grall, Les Wamboldt and Olde Tyme Country will perform at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Victor Reventlow will host the acoustic jam from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Tuesday. Don’t be left out!

■ Tonight and every Thursday, Larry and Rene Bauer direct the goings-on at the open mic hosted by the Cracked Bean, 108 DelGuzzi Drive, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Tuesday, Howly Slim picks and grins at Kokopelli Grill, 203 E. Front St., at 6 p.m.

■ Every Tuesday evening at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all adults 45 years and older from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. 
$5 cover, first-timers free!

■ On Wednesday at Dupuis Restaurant, 256861 U.S. Highway 101, Bob and Dave play blues with a brew and barbecue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sequim and Blyn

■ On Friday, grab your sidekick and head for the Oasis Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., and dine and dance to the Old Sidekicks from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, get your boogie up and dance to the classic rock of Chantilly Lace from 8 p.m. to midnight. The band plays many classics from the ’50s through the ’70s that many bands don’t cover, like Sherry and others, that require a two- to three-octave range.

■ On Saturday, Denny Secord Jr. livens up Randy’s Place at 3 Crabs Restaurant, 11 Three Crabs Road, with country and old rock from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ Every Wednesday at Mugs ‘n’ Jugs Bar & Grill, 735 W. Washington St., Jimmy Hoffman and friends perform unplugged from 7 p.m. to midnight. Donations welcome.

■ At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas and Victor Reventlow host the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

■ On Friday at Stymie’s Bar & Grill at Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, Kelly Hoch and Barry Burnett perform classic rock and country from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at Club Seven Lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, Phil Westbrook, “The Piano Man,” tickles the ivories from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. You can get tickled, too, if your tune request stumps him.

On Saturday, dance to Pop Culture, a Club Seven favorite, ‘cuz they play Top 40 and classic rock and country from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Sunday, you’ll not want to miss the Timebenders and their tribute to the best songs of the ’60s through the ’90s, complete with costume changes and comedy, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Monday, we be jammin’ with host Barry Burnett and friends, so bring your ax and/or vocal talents for the fun from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Port Hadlock

■ On Friday at the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., Daniel Mache will play classical and finger-style guitar at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Buzz Rogowski will play jazz and originals on piano for the wine dinner at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, Jim Nyby will perform blues, ballads, jazz and soul at 6 p.m.

Port Townsend

■ Tonight at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., waltz to the “Homemade Music” of Kristin and Otto Smith when they host Waltz Night at 7:30 p.m. No snow this time, so you should be able to make it. Dance review and lesson at 7 p.m. $5 cover.

On Friday, the Robin Bessier Quintet plays jazz with heart, harmony and humor at 7:30 p.m. Vocalist Robin is backed by Skip Morris, vocals, guitar; Mike Horsfall, piano, vibraphone; Ted Enderle, bass; and Tom Svornich, drums. $5 cover.

On Saturday, Paul Green and Straightshot Blues Band will get your blues juices flowin’ at 8 p.m. $10 cover.

On Sunday, jazz it up with the Carla Main Band at 6 p.m. $6 cover.

On Wednesday, the Seattle-based Kora Band will bring its unique infusion of West African music and jazz for its first appearance in Port Townsend. $8 cover, youths $4.

■ Tonight at The Castle Key, Seventh and Sheridan streets, Johnny Z and Sylvia Heins play jazz from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Castle, as in Geoffrey Castle, comes to The Castle with his magic violin from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. He will not disappoint! $10 cover.

■ Joe Crecca and the Home Wreckers will play rock and blues Saturday at the Uptown Pub and Grill, 1016 Lawrence St., at 9 p.m.

■ Ol’ Howly Slim picks and grins at the Banana Leaf Bistro, 609 Washington St., on Friday at 6 p.m.

■ George Radebaugh entertains Friday at Lanza’s, 1020 Lawrence St., at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Mike Horsfall takes the stage at 6 p.m.

■ Steve Grandinetti picks and sings Saturday at the Owl Sprit, 218 Polk St., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Music notes

■ On Saturday, Washington Old Time Fiddlers play live music at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, Chimacum. All-players jam from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., performance from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Free and open to the public. Donations support scholarships. ■ On Sunday, the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association of Clallam and Jefferson Counties has its annual spring concert, Me ‘n’ My Fiddle, at the Sequim High School auditorium, 601 N. Sequim Ave. The concert begins at 2 p.m. after a performance by the Dungeness All Stars Folk Dance Band at 1:30 p.m. The Angel Band will play during intermission.

Ralph Byers (93!!), the Man in the Hat and one of the district’s original founders, will be saluted.

A donation of $5 per person, $10 per family or a membership purchase would be appreciated.

■ On Saturday evening, dance to the Cajun/zydeco music of Swamp Soul at the Quimper Grange, 1210 Corona St., Port Townsend, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. $12 cover.

■ Fans of the No Inhibitions jazz band will be sorry to hear of the death of its leader, Willy Peterson, 40.

Willy brought his band to many of the Jazz in the Olympics gigs and was a monthly regular on jazz nights at 7 Cedars.

He died of Burkitt’s lymphoma.

A benefit for the Peterson family, hosted by Moxie Swing, will be Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at One Ten Lounge, 18881 Front St., Poulsbo.
