JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Peninsula acts add to summer fun

THE SUMMER HEAT wave rolls along, just as live music keeps the North Olympic Peninsula entertainment scene hot. Here’s the lineup:

Port Angeles

• Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, the Sundowners host a jam from 5 to 8 p.m. These fellas really know how to have fun!

The Jimmy Hoffman Band returns to its roots Friday and Saturday, dishing out some tasty country rock along with sides of country soul and Jimmy’s own sweet originals from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with a $3 cover.

• On Saturday, Port Angeles-based SuperTrees takes their classic rock ‘n’ roll show to the Junction Roadhouse, at the junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Route 112, five miles west of Port Angeles, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Bring your dancing shoes and $3 for the cover.

On Sunday, the Junction has Barry Burnett with the Sunday Jam from 8 p.m. to midnight.

In the meantime Jason Mogi is on summer hiatus and will not be appearing Wednesday.

• At Wine on the Waterfront, 115 Railroad Ave., it’s Ferris Friday with Charlie Ferris crooning pop, rock and country with his Memories and Melodies show at 7 p.m.; $3 cover.

On Saturday at 8 p.m., the 8-Second Ride makes its WOW debut after a successful appearance at the Concert on the Pier in Port Angeles. $3 cover.

• On Saturday, get wired when the all-girl AC/DC tribute band Hells Belles plays for the grand opening of R Bar, 132 E. Front St. Doors open at 8 p.m. for this internationally acclaimed band; the opening act is 3D Witch Hunt, and there’s a $10 cover.

• On Friday, at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., the Big Fine Daddies will rock you at downtown Port Angeles’ other new club from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $3 cover.

• Today at Kokopelli’s Underground, 203 E. Front St., Howly Slim will be pickin’, grinnin’ and singin’ at 6 p.m. for your dining pleasure.

• On Saturday, you’ll find Charlie Ferris among the vegetables and other eatables and sundries purveyed at the Port Angeles Farmers Market at the Gateway Center, Front and Lincoln streets.

• Dave and Rosalie Secord and the whole Luck of the Draw gang are back at the Fairmount Restaurant, on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the Tuesday acoustic jam. Don’t be left out!

• On Friday, The Veela Cafe, 133 E. First St., has Jim Lind providing rock and country, fast and slow from his impressive repertoire, at 7:30 p.m.

• Every Tuesday, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys, playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of everybody 45 years and older, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody. First-timers free, otherwise $5 cover.

Sequim and Blyn

• Today, don’t miss the jam hosted by Chantilly Lace at the Oasis Sports Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Any Thursday night you’ll find some of the best jammers from your favorite bands joining in the fun. Classic rock and country from the ’50s and ’60s, and blues and pop from later decades are all in the broad repertoire honed across 35 years. Jammers come in early and sign in on the sign-up sheet.

Next Wednesday, the Blue Hole Quintet plays jazz, Latin, rock, waltzes and Dixie with vocals that are sure to get you on the dance floor from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• On Friday, Me, Myself, and I, aka Mike Kamphaus, brings his one-man show to Damiana’s Best Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mike plays a variety of instruments with vocal harmonies on hits from the ’50s through the ’80s.

• At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas hosts the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

• Jim Hoffman goes solo Friday at Stymie’s Bar and Grill at the Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, performing country classics from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• Today in the Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars Casino in Blyn, the High Maintenance duo plays lots of classics to get you on the dance floor from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, high-energy dance band Deja Gruv will get you movin’ and groovin’ from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and again Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Denny Secord Jr. and Haywire make it a perfect country evening from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Monday, Savoy Nights plays your dancing favorites from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Hadlock

• At the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., on Friday and Sunday, Greg Vinson plays his unique style of beatnik jazz at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Barry Burnett and friends play your favorites from the classic era of rock ‘n’ roll at 6 p.m.

Port Townsend

• Today at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., Centrum’s Port Townsend Jazz Festival has Jazz in the Clubs from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The PNW Quartet is featured with Dan Balmer on the guitar; Dawn Clement, piano; Doug Miller, bass; and Clarence Acox, drums. But remember, you need that $25 all-club wristband.

On Friday, there are two events: At 6:30 p.m., catch the Louis Aissen Quartet with Elan Solvick for $6, and Jazz in the Clubs continues from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. with George Cables, piano; John Clayton, bass; and Tootie Heath, drums.

On Saturday, the Upstage continues to light up with three shows: At 1 p.m., it’s United By Music with blues diva Candye Kane showcasing the program for disabled and special-needs people. The event is free, but please make reservations. At 6:30 p.m., the Louis Aissen Quartet with Elan Solvick performs. Then Jazz in the Clubs continues from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. with George Cables, piano; John Clayton, bass; and, Gary Hobbs on drums.

On Sunday, Maria Muldaur and her Bluesiana Band perform at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25.

Maria, a blues legend with a career that spans 50 years, was nominated this year for the Acoustic Album of the Year by the Blues Music Society. Call 360-385-2216 for reservations.

• On Friday, the Shed Boys play at Port Townsend Brewing, 330 10th St., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the brew pub, enjoy the grooves of Shady Grove.

Next Wednesday, the Pitfalls play a mix of Southern rock and Northwest grunge from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• On Friday at Sirens, 823 Water St., Marilyn K and Company play American bluegrass, country and blues acoustically at 9 p.m.; cover charge is $5.

• On Saturday at the Boiler Room, 711 Water St., Stand Up and Shout and Touch Me Satan rock on at 8 p.m.

• At Castle Key Restaurant, Seventh and Sheridan streets, Buzz Rogowski plays from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. No cover.

At 10 p.m., Centrum’s Jazz in the Clubs brings Jeb Patton, piano; Doug Miller, bass; and, Gary Hobbs, drums. The $25 all-clubs wristband-charge applies.

Community concerts

• Friends of Fort Flagler presents Jubilee playing a mix of vintage bluegrass, country and rock ‘n’ roll with a little gospel thrown in Saturday at 7 p.m. You’ll enjoy their toe-tappin’, knee-slappin’ sound at Battery Bankhead at Fort Flagler State Park on Marrowstone Island.

• Next Tuesday in Sequim, the horn-driven eclectic rock of Locust Street Taxi graces the James Center for the Performing Arts band shell at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the movie (weather permitting) “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” showing at dusk.

• In Port Angeles’ Concert on the Pier series next Wednesday, rock to Kevin Magner and Bound to Happen from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• Today in Port Townsend, Port Angeles’ own Deadwood Revival plays at the end of Water Street from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Special music events

• Live music is interlaced with other programs at Port Ludlow Days on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday on the Harbor Master Parking Lot Stage, the Alligator Jazz Band plays from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., afterward, listen to the Hawaiian music of Naki’i from 1:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., with the Washington Old Time Fiddlers playing from 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

The Dixi-blu Band plays for the Windermere Block Party on the Lagoon Lawn from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a $10 admission charge.

On Sunday, enjoy the zydeco sound of the Delta Rays on the Harbor Master stage from noon to 1:45 p.m. followed by the Tune Stranglers from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., with Denny Secord Sr. and the Northwest Country Boys closing out the program from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

• On Friday, Chantilly Lace plays from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Port Angeles Speedway before the Auto Daredevil Thrill Show at 8 p.m. Get there early! Adults $15; 11 and younger $10.

• On Wednesday, the internationally famous Third World Band will take the 7 Cedars Casino stage at 8 p.m. to benefit the Sequim Education Foundation. The Third World Band is on its 35th anniversary tour and is one of the longest running reggae bands. Its music is cutting edge, positive, progressive and internationally relevant. $25 cover, $35 to meet the band.

• On Friday, a Music in the Meadow concert and fundraiser for the North Olympic Land Trust features Kory Nagler and the Good Boys plus opening act Mix and Match, at 7 p.m. at Ennis Arbor Farm, 824 Lindberg Road, Port Angeles. Nagler and the Good Boys play a fusion of rock, soul, country, folk, blues and gospel, while Mix and Match does a cappella doo-wop. Bring a picnic, chairs and blankets, and come early if you like. Tickets are $10, youths younger than 15 free.

Music news

With teams of two to four, contestants try to put together a puzzle in a two-hour time limit. Justin Senter and Rachel Cook finished their puzzle in 54 minutes to win the event.
