JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Mercury rising for area’s live music

THE WEATHER ISN’T the only thing that’s really heating up.

The live music scene is doing the same with a new bar opening in Port Angeles, a party cruise in, wine release, community concerts, a returning blues legend and a whole lot more.

Port Angeles

• Washington Blues Society 2010 vocalist of the year and stroke survivor Mark Whitman and his band return to the Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 five miles west of Port Angeles, on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Don’t miss this chance to see this Northwest blues legend.

Need a ride? All Points Charters and Tours will be providing free transportation to and from the Junction starting at 8 p.m. Phone John at 360-775-9128 to get picked up.

On Sunday, Barry Burnett will be back with the Sunday jam from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Jason Mogi of Deadwood Revival and the Good Medicine Band plays Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

• Tonight at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, the Sundowners host a jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. These fellas really know how to have fun!

On Friday and Saturday, the Turner Brothers Band returns for another weekend of classic rock ‘n’ roll from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $3 cover.

• The R Bar (formerly the Other Side), 132 E. Front St., all cleaned and painted with new decor, is hosting Big Fine Daddies Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Come and check out this fine new venue. Cover.

Art Rock — a night of music, art and dancing SEmD returns to 229 W. First St. where it started, but this time under the BarN9ne, 229 W. First St., banner, Friday at 9 p.m. Stop in after visiting the galleries to continue your evening with Rate Limiting Step and dance the night away. $3 cover.

• Tonight at Wine on the Waterfront, 115 Railroad Ave., the irrepressible Charlie Ferris will delight with songs from the crooners to country covering the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, with music and trivia thrown in, in his Melodies and Memories Show from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $3 cover.

On Saturday, BBP (Barry, Bill, and Paul) play classic rock from the ’50s and ’60s at 8 p.m. $3 cover.

• Dave Secord and Rosalie and the whole Luck of the Draw gang are at the Fairmount Restaurant on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the Tuesday acoustic jam. Don’t be left out!

• On Friday night, the Veela Cafe, 133 E. First St., has Jim Lind providing both rock and country, fast and slow, from his impressive repertoire at 7:30 p.m.

• Every Tuesday evening, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys, playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all seniors 45 years plus from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets. $5 cover, first-timers free!

Forks

• On Saturday, take in Therapy Session at Cafe Paix/A Work in Progress Cafe, 71 N. Forks Ave., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and relax to some country, blues, and folk music.

Clallam Bay/Sekiu

• This weekend is Clallam Bay/Sekiu Fun Days and they’ll be rockin’ out at the Gallery (Bill Green Building on state Highway 112, Clallam Bay) to the Oregon-based band The Morels at 7 p.m. This band has been together for years, so wear your best hippie/tie-dye duds for this great party.

Sequim

• Tonight, don’t miss the jam hosted by Chantilly Lace at the Oasis Sports Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Any Thursday night you’ll find some of the best jammers from your favorite bands joining in the fun. Classic rock and country from the ’50s and ’60s, blues and pop from later decades are all in the broad repertoire honed over 35 years. Jammers come in early and sign in on the sign-up sheet.

On Friday, Skidder Hill plays country and bluegrass with fiddle and more from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Is that the Orange Blossom Special I hear?

On Saturday, Rick Willis and the Beat Funkels play classic rock from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Next Wednesday, Final Approach lands with their boomer music from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• On Saturday, Howly Slim performs original tunes with vocals and guitar at Las Palomas Mexican Restaurant, 1085 E. Washington St., from 5:30 p.m.

• At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas hosts the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

• At Stymies Bar and Grill at Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, Lori and Clipper play acoustic rock and roll Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• Tonight at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, in the Club Seven Lounge, Jubilee plays old country, folk and more from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday and Saturday, Sonic Funk, the big band with the big dance sound rocks out from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Sunday, the Funaddicts, a fun band that can play anything from any era, plays from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Monday, dance to the Dixieland stylings of The Dukes of Dabob from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Hadlock

• Tonight at the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., Buzz Rogowski plays jazz and originals on piano at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, Jim Nyby plays blues, ballads, jazz and soul from 5:30 p.m.

• Get your Dixieland fix Saturday at the Valley Tavern, 21 Chimacum Road, with the Dukes of Dabob at 7 p.m.

Port Townsend

• Tonight, catch Zydeco legend Donna Angelle and the Donna Angelle Band. Voted 2003 Vocalist of the Year, she rates the title “Zydeco Diva.” She’s at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., at 8 p.m. $15.

On Friday, it’s the blues with Paul Green and Straightshot, 8 p.m. $10.

On Saturday, the blues continue to hold sway with Doug MacLeod, 8 p.m. $10.

On Tuesday, the mood swings to country with Devon Dawson and his vintage Western swing, at 8 p.m. $10.

And then we swing from country to early folk and Americana with the Shady Grove Band, Wednesday at 6 p.m. $5.

• Port Townsend Brewing, 330 10th Street, has the Delta Rays on tap Friday with a head of great blues from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, Gerauld Braude plays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, Chuck Easton will jazz up hump day with some world class jazz from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• Sirens, 823 Water St., goes Celtic with The Bards of Keypoynt Friday at 9 p.m. $5.

On Saturday The Mission Three bring their originals and blues classics from 9 p.m. $5.

• On Saturday at Castle Key Restaurant, Seventh and Sheridan streets, the Fred Hoadley Trio plays jazz for your listening and dining pleasure from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. $10 cover.

• On Saturday, Undertown, 211 Taylor St., hosts the Jim Nyby/Doug Warren Band at 7:30 p.m.

Music news

• Olympic Cellars, 255410 U.S. Highway 101, east of Port Angeles, is offering up some sizzling summer fun during its Red, White and All That’s New Wine Release Party this weekend. On Saturday, in an outdoor concert at 7 p.m., Seattle’s Red Hot Blues Sisters will perform soulful vocals and searing guitar riffs on the patio. $5 cover.

• On Friday at Ruddell Auto Mall, 110 Golf Course Road, Port Angeles The Wayback Machine will take you back to the times that the 400 or so “cruisers” will evoke at their 14th annual Cruise In from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Community Concerts

• Port Angeles’ Deadwood Revival takes their old-time, roots jam band to Battery Bankhead for a Friends of Fort Flagler Concert in the Park Saturday at 7 p.m. Come early because this revival will bring out the best movin’ and groovin’ you can muster.

• Next Tuesday, rock out to the classic of Big Fine Daddies at the James Center for the Performing Arts at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., Sequim, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• Port Angeles’ Concert on the Pier series next Wednesday features the Dixi-Blu Jazz Band with music to soothe the soul from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• Jane’s Hats featuring Jane Vanderhoof will perform some keyboard tunes at the Port Angeles Farmers Market on Saturday, and Port Townsend’s Matt Sircely will perform folk, bluegrass and mountain music starting at 2:30 p.m. at the Wednesday Farmers Market.

• Sara Shea will lend her vocals to the Sequim Open Aire Market this Saturday.
