JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Live music lives

IT’S THURSDAY AGAIN, and another week of Keeping Live Music Alive is ahead — in more ways than one.

Port Angeles

• On Friday at the Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 five miles west of Port Angeles, Chantilly Lace, the band that spawned the Keep Live Music Alive movement eight years ago here in Port Angeles (and ultimately this column), plays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $3 cover.

On Sunday, Chantilly Lace returns to host the benefit jam in memory of Chantilly Lace drummer and co-founder of KLMA Terry Mays, who passed away Jan. 30. There will be musicians from all over the country performing from 5 p.m. to about 11 p.m. The Jazz in the Olympics Society (JITOS) Youth Jazz Band will give the downbeat from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. to get the event started. Funds raised by the raffle and auctions will be divided between the JITOS Camp Heebies Jeebies Youth Band at Camp David Jr. and the Port Angeles High School Band Boosters supporting our young musicians.

Next Wednesday, Jason Mogi returns for his regular Wednesday night gig from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

• Tonight at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, the Sundowners host a jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. These fellas really know how to have fun!

• Friday’s Second Friday Art Rock (2 FAR) event at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., features local Latin jazz group Tanga playing a potent blend of jazz and funk with rhythmic touches of the Caribbean and Brazil at 8:30 p.m. $3 cover.

• On Saturday, the Rhythms of America come to Wine on the Waterfront, 115 Railroad Ave., with a special appearance by Tyler Richart and Kora Kana at 8 p.m. This band of American roots-based musicians tackles the traditional music of West Africa. The duo will be aided by Sean Divine, Cort Armstrong and Kia Armstrong. $5 cover.

• Howly Slim will be at the Landing Art Gallery on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• On Monday, Valentine’s Day, Howly Slim performs country and folk at Kokopelli Grill Restaurant, 203 E. Front St., at 6 p.m.

• Chuck Grall, Les Wamboldt and the Sound Dogs will be at Smuggler’s Landing, 115 Railroad Ave., on Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• Tonight and every Thursday, Larry and Rene Bauer direct the goings-on at the open mic hosted by the Cracked Bean, 108 DelGuzzi Drive, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• Every Tuesday evening at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all adults 45 years and older from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover, first-timers free!

• On Wednesday at Dupuis Restaurant, 256861 U.S. Highway 101, Bob and Dave play blues with a brew and barbecue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• Victor Reventlow hosts the acoustic jam at the Fairmount Restaurant on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday. Don’t be left out!

Sequim and Blyn

• Tonight at the Oasis Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., catch blues performer Keith Scott from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Friday, Gil Yslas and Rick May play from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday is rock night and features Stone Axe and Elephant Graveyard at 9 p.m. $3 cover.

On Monday, the Old Sidekicks give a special Valentine’s Day performance from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Irish Session is in session from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Wednesday, revel with Jubilee from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• Every Wednesday at Mugs ‘n’ Jugs Bar and Grill, 735 W. Washington St., Jimmy Hoffman and friends perform unplugged from 7 p.m. to midnight. Donations welcome.

• Howly Slim plays at Las Palomas Mexican Restaurant on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

• On Monday, enjoy “Jazz for Lovers” at the Old Mill Cafe, 721 Carlsborg Road, performed by John Erskine on piano from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Phone 360-582-1583 for reservations.

• On Saturday, Sidekicks will entertain in Randy’s Place, the family sports pub at 3 Crabs Restaurant, 1133 3 Crabs Road, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

• At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas and Victor Reventlow host the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

• On Friday at Stymies Bar & Grill at the Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, Robbie Walden will entertain from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Monday, Robin Lynn helps you celebrate at the club’s Valentine’s Day dinner from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• On Friday at Club Seven Lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, Lori and Clipper perform from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, enjoy the hits from the ’70s to today with Sway from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Sunday and Monday, enjoy Rough Cut from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Hadlock

• The Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., has Daniel Mache and his classical finger-style guitar Friday at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Mark Holeman and friends play jazz for your pleasure at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, Jim Nyby returns with piano, harmonica and vocals with blues, ballads, jazz and soul at 5:30 p.m.

On Monday, Gerry Sherman helps you celebrate Valentine’s Day with guitar and ballads at 6 p.m.

Port Townsend

• Tonight at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., Howly Slim performs folk, blues and originals from 5 p.m. through the dinner hour.

On Friday, swing to your favorite country, roots and blues tunes performed by the Steele Magnolias with vocalist Jennifer Blomgren in a Valentine dance tradition.

On Saturday, Too Slim and the Tail Draggers play rockin’ award-winning blues at 8 p.m. Appearing with Too Slim is Northwest favorite Polly O’Keary.

On Wednesday, Towns-End Live presents two bands, the Uptown Rulers and the Steve Grandinetti Band, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• Sylvia Heins entertains with jazz standards Friday at the Uptown Pub and Grill, 1016 Lawrence St., at 5 p.m.

If you like newgrass and progressive country, stop down at Uptown on Saturday for Happy Hour from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for a touch of Ramblin Maggie.

• On Saturday, dance to the Better Half Band at MindBody Institute, Fort Worden Building 310, 200 Battery Way, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Suggested donation: adults $10, students $5, families $25. If you can’t cover the cover, come anyway for good family fun.

• On Saturday, the Washington Old Time Fiddlers play music at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road. All-players jam from noon to 1:30 p.m., performance from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Free and open to the public. Donations support fiddler scholarships. • The Annual Scholarship Dinner and Auction for the Port Angeles High School Band Boosters will be held Tuesday at the Port Angeles High School cafeteria with both silent and live auctions before and after the 6 p.m. dinner. Entertainment will be provided by the Port Angeles High School Jazz Band. $10 adults, $5 for children younger than 12 or $25 for a family of four.
