JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Enjoy local music outdoors, indoors

SUMMER FINALLY SEEMS to have beset us, so get out and enjoy the sunshine while it’s here; but after dark, enjoy live music in the clubs.

Better yet, take in the sun while enjoying the outdoor concerts and performances during the day and early evening.

Port Angeles

■ On Saturday at the Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 five miles west of Port Angeles, take a step back in time and dance to the rock ‘n’ roll golden oldies of Chantilly Lace from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The boys have also added some later rock tunes — just as golden but not as old. Chantilly Lace will keep you on the dance floor all night. $5 cover.

Johnnie Mustang hosts the Sunday Junction Blues Jam from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. There have been some great jams and blues improvisations lately. Come and join in.

■ Tonight at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, come on down for Jerry’s Country Jam (no jelly here) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. If country’s your style, come and dance or play plugged or unplugged.

On Friday, dance to the Celtic rhythms and more of Tillers Folly, long a Juan de Fuca Festival staple, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday, rock out to Sequim’s Testify from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

■ A favorite from the Juan de Fuca Festival, Rose’s Pawn Shop is back to rock Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., on Friday night.

■ On Saturday night at Wine on the Waterfront (WOW) at The Landing mall, 115 Railroad Ave., talented singer/songwriter Scott Sullivan returns to deliver his thought-provoking lyrics and outstanding musicianship at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

■ On Friday, Les Wamboldt and Olde Tyme Country perform at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Dave and Rosalie Secord and the Luck of the Draw band welcome guest Steve Karns (guitar/vocals) for a rousing evening of acoustic country, bluegrass and old-time music from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Port Angeles Farmers Market at The Gateway, Cort Armstrong picks tunes you have come to know and love from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, Ramoth Gilead performs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

■ On Monday, Rusty and Duke entertain at Smuggler’s Landing, 115 Railroad Ave., with some pickin’ and sweet singin’ from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ Every Tuesday evening at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all adults 45 years and older from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover, first-timers free!

■ On Wednesday at Dupuis Restaurant, 256861 U.S. Highway 101, Bob and Dave play blues with a brew and barbecue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Joyce

■ On Saturday, the Salt Creek Restaurant and Lounge, 53821 state Highway 112, is having a Joyce Daze extravaganza with two bands providing the music at 4 p.m. Ain’t Dead Yet and VooDoo BBQ will provide the boogie music until closing.

Sequim and Blyn

■ On Friday at the Oasis Bar & Grill, 301 E. Washington St., Denny Secord Jr. goes solo from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Blue Hole Quintet will jazz it up from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ Damiana’s Wine Bar and Bistro, 143 W. Washington St., has its house band, Locozonly, with Kevin Magner, Scott Bradley and Sister Mary Therasa performing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. during First Friday Art Walk. Stop and sip the art of winemaking and the art of Marina Shipova.

■ At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas and Victor Reventlow host the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

■ On Friday at Stymie’s Bar & Grill at Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, the Discovery Bay Pirates run amok from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ On Friday at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, Sequim favorite Turner Brothers Band rocks out from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday, reggae comes in the form of the award-winning band Adrien Xavier. Come feel the love from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Elvis fans and those who would like to know more about the “King of Rock and Roll,” don’t miss Danny Vernon’s “The Illusion of Elvis” on Sunday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. You can’t see Elvis anymore, but Danny will show you the best “Elvis” you’ll ever see. This is another “must-see” show.

On Monday, we be jammin’ with host Barry Burnett and friends, so bring your ax and/or vocal talents for the fun from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Port Hadlock

■ On Saturday at the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., BBR (Barry, Bill and Rudy) perform acoustic classic rock and country from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Townsend

■ Tonight at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., the Duvo Egyuttes Ensemble returns with the authentic music of a Hungarian Tanchaz (dance house) from 8 p.m. After the formal concert is over, they will play for open dancing. $12 cover.

On Friday at 5:30 p.m., Jim Nyby and the F Street Band play, followed by Centrum’s Blues in the Clubs at 8 p.m. with performances by Arthur Migliazza, Pura Fé and Erwin Helfer.

On Saturday, the F Street Band returns at 5:30 p.m. with more Centrum performers after 8 p.m.: Son Jack Jr. and Michael Wilde, Suce Greg Wilson and the Ebony Hillbillies.

On Tuesday, the Louisiana Sun Kings play rock, soul and funk at 7:30 p.m. $5 cover.

On Wednesday, Ashia Grzesik and Friends and the Crow Quill Night Owls perform Balkan, Gothic folk, jug band and Gypsy music at 7:30 p.m. Cover a suggested $10, but sliding scale to $5.

■ On Friday at Port Townsend Brewing Co., 330 10th St., Ravin’ Wolf returns to the wet side of the state delivering a mix of blues, rock, Southern and pop fusion from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, John Nelson (not I) will be serving up some rock, jazz, folk and world beat music from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, BBR comes by with some classic folk music and more from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Saturday the Steve Grandinetti Band plays at the Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., from 9 p.m. to midnight.

■ Tonight at the Owl Sprit, 218 Polk St., and every Thursday, Steve Grandinetti goes solo on guitar from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Area concerts

■ Tonight in Port Townsend’s Concert on the Dock series in the Pope Marine Park Plaza, Blacky Sheridan plays classic and modern rock at 5:30 p.m.

■ On Tuesday for Music in the Park at Sequim’s James Center for the Performing Arts, Kevin Lee Magner plays original folk, rock and blues from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Wednesday in Port Angeles’ Concert on the Pier, get your blues fix with the Cody Rentas Band from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

High notes

■ On Saturday in Joyce, they’re celebrating Joyce Daze with blackberry pie, flea market and live music beginning at 10 a.m. with Ruby and Fran, followed by Bill and Lill, Rusty and Duke and Irish Revenge, with Dave and Rosalie Secord and the Luck of the Draw Band finishing up by 5 p.m. or when the cows come home. There will also be some clogging by the Olympic Mountain Cloggers.

■ Kathy Charlton and the Olympic Cellars Winery kick off their Summer Benefit Concert Series with the powerful blues, roots and rock of The Lynn Frances Anderson Band on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the winery, 255410 U.S. Highway 101, Port Angeles. Fifty percent of the $10 ticket price benefits the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center. Tickets may be purchased at the Patio Portal.

■ On Sunday, McComb Gardens, 751 McComb Road, Sequim, begins its Music at McComb 2011 Series with classical flutist Maxine Baucher. She will cover three centuries of classical and folk music with music appreciation, history, technique and anecdotal commentary.

■ The Clallam County Fair is having a variety and talent show at the fair Sunday, Aug. 21, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wilder Stage. Those interested in performing can get more info at www.clallamcountyfair.com. Tune up that old guitar, tweak those tonsils and join the fun.
