Children’s musical show coming to Port Angeles, Sequim

Recess Monkey, a “kindie” band on a nationwide tour, is bringing its children’s musical comedy show to the Port Angeles and Sequim libraries Tuesday, and admission is free.

Kindies — aka kindergartners and other kids — are invited, as are their grown-up associates, provided they behave.

Recess Monkey is, in fact, a bunch of Seattle schoolteachers who sing songs like “Lemonade,” “Popcorn,” “Bouncy House” and “Human Cannonball.”

Just this past week, the crew — Jack Forman, Drew Holloway and Daron Henry — have performed in Columbia, S.C., as well as various venues in the New York metropolitan area, including Madison Square Park.

On the North Olympic Peninsula, the Monkey will give a 10:30 a.m. concert on the outdoor stage behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. — unless it rains, in which case, the band will play in the Sequim Middle School cafeteria at 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

Then it’s on to the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., for a 2 p.m. matinee the same day.

Recess Monkey is also known to National Public Radio and Radio Disney’s listeners for such recent recordings as the circus-themed album “In Tents.”

According to Time magazine, the CD is jammed with songs that are “tight [and] smart . . . and seriously grooving funk.”

Dancing and singing along are encouraged during the Monkey’s shows, which are part of the “Dream Big, Read!” summer program at the North Olympic Library System’s libraries in Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay.

Like other “Dream Big” events, the shows are funded by the Port Angeles and Sequim Friends of the Library.

To find out more about “Dream Big, Read!” activities and other offerings for young people, visit the North Olympic Library System website, www.NOLS.org, or phone Youth Services Librarian Jennifer Knight at 360-417-8502.

Rainshadow Equine Sanctuary Team’s Debi Pavlich-Boaz leads Paliday calmly over a blue tarp as part of his daily training routine. She worked with the Yakima Sheriff’s Department to capture the mini stallion when he was running alongside a freeway, deftly evading capture. Without her help, and an offer to take him home, the sheriff’s department planned on taking the then-untrained pony to a local holding pen to await transport to a slaughter house in Canada. Instead, Paliday is now happily living the rest of days out as a gelding at the sanctuary.
