My dad told of fighting a forest fire when he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
The danger was so great that he and others were ordered to blockade the highway and conscript all able-bodied men to help.
Men were sent to the fire line in their suits and dress shoes.
The line held and the community was saved.
Today we’re fighting the COVID-19 fire and there are gaps in the fire line.
Some of the able-bodied say there is no fire, some are afraid of fire and some don’t care; the argument is made that each individual has the right to do whatever pleases him or her.
Meanwhile the fire burns.
It is particularly disheartening when those in positions of authority undercut efforts to fight the COVID-19 fire and encourage those who don’t choose to show up to help.
The example is the Sequim City Council.
I live in Port Angeles and we are soon to vote on the membership of our city council.
Some want to replace the current council with a new council made up of those apparently more in line with the ideology of the Sequim council.
I fully support the incumbent council.
They come from different backgrounds and represent the community.
Let’s support council members who focus on common sense and the needs and wishes of the majority of the citizens and avoid the distractions of internet conspiracies and misinformation.
