LETTERS: Need more requirements for gun ownership

When someone finally decided there were enough deaths from cigarettes, what happened?

Warning labels were put on cigarette packs, excise taxes increased and insurance premiums for smokers went through the roof.

People have the right to own a gun, but then it’s their responsibility to pay for the damage it causes.

• Require a hefty annual premium to be paid into an insurance fund to cover costs of the injured and to the families of the deceased.

• Require medical insurance from approved insurance companies to cover in-depth mental health evaluations of the entire family.

Proof of insurance must be provided prior to purchase.

• All family members must attend gun safety classes and be issued a certificate that must be in their possession when carrying a gun.

If found without it, a hefty fine would be applied.

• A mandatory visit to the home, prior to the gun purchase, to make sure the homeowner has a locked, not a key lock, unit to house the gun.

Even the humane society does that for the safety of their animals.

• Put a warning inscription on the gun that it can cause death.

• Devise a lock system on every gun wherein it takes a code to unlock it before the gun is usable.

We already have this on briefcases, phones, computers, cars and other items.

• Stop production of military-style assault weapons.
