LETTER: Vote yes on I-1631 for endangered birds

Climate change is one of the greatest conservation challenges of our time and is one of the leading threats to birds and other wildlife in Washington and across the nation.

The National Audubon Society’s Birds and Climate Report of 2014 found that 189 of Washington’s most iconic and beloved bird species are threatened by climate change.

Our local ducks and hawks, and even the tiny rufous hummingbird, could shift their habitat ranges northward or even go extinct in the coming decades if we don’t take action.

Now, more than ever, we have a responsibility to be the voice for the birds and other wildlife and aggressively combat this urgent threat by protecting the places and conditions they need to thrive and by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Initiative 1631, imposing a carbon fee on big carbon polluters, is a common sense and fiscally responsible way for our state combat climate change, mitigate its effects and build a more resilient future.

I-1631 requires that the carbon fee collected by the state be spent on projects focused on clean air, clean water, clean energy and healthy forests.

When birds thrive, we all thrive. Join me in voting yes on I-1631 as a positive action now for future generations of birds and humans.
