LETTER: U.S. should hit China with trade tariffs

Because we have been trading with China for years the U.S. has successfuly built up their economy and helped their people gain a much better lifestyle.

This is okay.

Unfortunately, this means we are supporting their government, which doesn’t give their people the same freedoms and rights as we have.

In China, we have all read about people getting long prison sentences for speaking out against the leadership.

They have crushed the gentle people of Tibet, according to media reports.

We are helping to stengthen a China that has continually been spying on us, continually hitting us with cyber attacks, stealing our trade and military secrets, and using our money to build up their military as fast as they can.

Do you want our sons or grandsons fighting against a numerically superior military?

Do you?

We are benefitting a government that does not seem to value our principles of free speech, freedom of press, freedom to assemble, freedom of religion and the right to vote.

China is free to have their own form of government without doing what we want, but I submit that we hit them with more tariffs and start promoting more trade with other countries who share our democratic values, such as India or Brazil.
