LETTER: The normalization of our democracy’s destruction is the real crime here

There is no shame in having been fooled by someone very good at fooling people.

There is shame in doing nothing about it when the truth finally becomes apparent.

According to Wikipedia, normalization “refers to social processes through which ideas and actions come to be seen as ‘normal’ and become taken-for-granted or ‘natural’ in everyday life.”

In my opinion, Trump supporters, the conservative media and especially congressional Republicans, are all complicit in normalizing the most dangerous, inept, destructive, disgusting, unethical, undemocratic, dishonest and treasonous behavior in the history of the U.S. presidency.

Trump may have conned and lied his way into the presidency — shame on him — but the truth of his lies and misdeeds is now blatantly clear, and those of you who still support him: Shame on you.

In the Watergate scandal, crimes were committed by Americans, and on 9/11, America was viciously attacked by outsiders.

But in today’s scandal, a hostile, foreign nation has attacked the very core of American democracy, and the attackers were almost certainly helped by insiders.

The normalization of this Trump-Russia partnership through denials, obstruction of investigations and falsely redirecting blame is the real crime being committed.

The destruction of democracy and our right to elect our own government, in the long run, will do more damage and take more American lives than Watergate and 9/11 combined.

Trump is a fraud and liar, but those who still enable and support him are the real traitors to America.
